BYU has gotten off to a 1-3 start, but the Cougars finally play outside the Power 5 conferences this week and we've got a free pick to share for their matchup against Toledo.

There was, of course, that exciting late field goal to lift Brigham Young to an 18-16 win in the season opener over Arizona in Phoenix. It has been nothing but tears for Kalani Sitake and the Cougars since then, and they'll try to stop a 3-game slide when the Toledo Rockets come to Provo for a Friday night get-together in Week 5.

Kickoff at LaVell Edwards Stadium is set for 10:15 PM (ET), ESPN2 handling the broadcast chores, and early lines sent out for the contest do like the Cougars to do just that, though not overwhelmingly. 5Dimes opened the action with BYU laying 3½ and that spread is holding. A total in the matchup has yet to be released, so bettors need to keep an eye on SBR's live NCAA football odds to catch that number.

Friday's clash marks the first time the two schools have met on a gridiron, and the first time BYU has gone up against a team from the MAC since 1983.

Rockets Flying High Under Candle
While Sitake and BYU are hoping to stop a 3-game slide, Jason Candle and Toledo arrive in Provo looking to extend a 3-game win streak. In fact, the Rockets have won four straight since Candle took over at the end of the 2015 campaign, beating Temple in the Boca Raton Bowl as slight underdogs and covering all three victories this season, twice as favorites.

They've had almost two weeks off since dismantling Fresno State, 52-17, the Rockets almost sensing that contest past a 57½ point total on their own. Logan Woodside once again directed a very efficient offense that is filled with upperclassmen and ranks sixth nationally averaging over 560 yards per game. Woodside has spread his aerials around to three primary targets, wideouts Cody Thompson and Corey Jones plus tight end Michael Roberts, and the redshirt junior has been well protected with the Rockets O-line yet to allow a sack.

Close Defeats Mounting For Cougars
While few of us expected BYU to drop three of its first four games, most foresaw the Cougars struggling a bit this year thanks to having one of the tougher schedules in the country. The good news for college football bettors is they remain unbeaten at the window, beating or covering the odds in all four games.

All of the games have been close, the largest margin at the end being three points. That was the margin last week in a 35-32 defeat against West Virginia at FedEx Field in Maryland. Four turnovers cost the Cougars dearly, the final one an interception near the goal line driving for a potential winning score.

With both sides perfect at the window this year, it makes for a tough free college football pick. Take the team that's also unbeaten straight up and getting points on the road or the home team that is giving them up and on a 3-game losing streak? I'm going with the latter and getting behind the Cougars.
