Clemson has had an up and down season and their upcoming encounter with the Hokies is going to be a real test for them. The Tigers are home favorites and, on paper, shouldn't have a problem winning, but that might not be the case this weekend.

Virginia Tech vs Clemson

Another 'win and you’re in' game, more than likely. Clemson’s season has been up and down in quality of performance: Grinding out games rather than blowing away the competition. Although the South Carolina result from this past weekend was way more efficient for Dabo Swinney’s outfit.

This Clemson Tiger defense has been all sorts of vulnerable this year, referenced by the Pittsburgh game. And all year, Clemson’s D and the inconsistent play of Deshaun Watson has allowed teams with inferior talent to stay in games where a team with the right motivation wouldn’t allow. The inconsistency of Deshaun Watson has been rather alarming in his final year before heading off to the league. His interception count has been far higher than last year which would be a worry for teams in the NFL.

Obviously, this uneven play has caught up with Clemson at times with NC State missing an extra point in a game which they should have won and Florida State took them to the wire in an absorbing contest. Close games against quality opponents and I expect this game to be no different.

Virginia Tech is going to need a stellar game from their defense to stay in this contest, similar to the V-Tech performance against Miami where they sacked Brad Kaaya eight times. Justin Fuente’s team has a certain aura about them and despite being outclassed talent wise, expect them to stay close in this contest.

This is a decent football team and Clemson has allowed decent football teams to stay close. Clemson knows with a win, no matter how good or bad the performance is they should be in the Playoff. Jerod Evans and company keep the Hokies in this contest. For my college football pick, I say take V-Tech plus the points.
