The Maryland Terrapins and West Virginia Mountaineers will renew their border rivalry Saturday, as the two teams meet up at M&T Bank Stadium.

Let’s take a closer look at the college football odds page for this non-conference matchup, with the opening kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

A switch under center

West Virginia picked up a 41-7 victory over Georgia State as 41-point home favorites last Saturday, as redshirt freshman quarterback Ford Childress made his first career start—finishing with 359 passing yards and three touchdowns.

The Mountaineers are 3-4 SU and 5-2 ATS as underdogs the last two-plus seasons, with the OVER going 5-2 in that situation.

A solid start

Maryland has won and covered the spread in its first three games—winning the statistical battle by a triple-digit margin in each of those affairs. The squad has outscored opponents by a 84-23 margin in the first half so far in 2013.

The Terrapins are one of only three schools to eclipse 500-plus yards of total offense in each of their games, but they’ve gone 4-5 ATS as favorites over the last two-plus seasons.

30 points is the magic number

College football handicappers need to realize that the Mountaineers are 83-6 SU since 2000 when scoring 30 points or more in a contest—hitting that mark in this series in each of the last six meetings.

West Virginia has compiled a 29-18 SU record against ACC opponents since 2002, while going 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS in that situation over the last two-plus seasons.

Dangerous situation

The Terrapins are worthy neutral-site favorites in this contest due to the early results for both sides this year, but head coach Randy Edsall’s record against the Mountaineers doesn’t have me running to the betting window.

Edsall is 1-8 SU in his career against West Virginia—losing the last seven games by an average of 12 points.

Prediction

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Mountaineers for their NCAA football picks, as they’ve covered the number in five of the last six meetings in this series.
