Let's review the match-up between the Utah Utes and BYU Cougars for our sports picks this week. What are the best ways to attack the betting odds in this event?

CFB Preview-Utah @ BYU

According to college football betting odds BYU is a 7.0-point favorite and the games has a total of 61.0. My college football odds service shows that 60% of public money has gone the way of the underdog thus far and 74% has been wagered on the game to go under the total. Utah has won the last 3 meetings in this annual showdown including a 54-10 blowout at BYU in 2011. As a matter of fact the Utes have won 7 of the last 10 games played at BYU and covered 8 of those 10 for our college football picks.

Heartbreak Hotel

After opening the season with a couple of very impressive wins Utah lost an absolute heartbreaker at home last week to Oregon St. The Utes came back from 17-point deficit early in the 3rd quarter but fell to the Beavers in overtime 51-48, and failed to cover as a 3.0-point favorite. The bad news for sophomore starting quarterback Travis Wilson is that he threw his first 3 interceptions of the season and they all came in the 2nd half of last week’s loss. The good news is that Wilson continues to look like a budding young star throwing for 279 yards and 2 scores. He also displayed his deceiving mobility rushing for 142 yards and 3 touchdowns. Utah is currently 18th nationally in total offense at 539 yards per game. The defense has ability but needs to clean things up if they hope to win on the road this week. In the 2 games versus FBS opponents this season the Utah defense has allowed an average of 38.5 points and 489 yards per game.

A Huge Upset Win

BYU comes of a scintillating 40-21 upset home win versus then nationally ranked Texas 40-21 to even their record at 1-1 on the season. That contest marked the first time the Cougars were a home underdog since 10/9/2010 versus San Diego St. In addition the 7.0-point home underdog role versus Texas was their largest since 9/18/2004 when they were a 26.0-point home dog versus USC. The most impressive statistic in their win over Texas was the fact they rushed for an eye popping 550 yards while averaging 7.6 yards per attempt. Sophomore quarterback Taysom Hill led the way running for 259 yards on 17 carries while averaging an unbelievable 15.2 yards per attempt. Sophomore running back Jamaal Williams also chipped in with 180 yards on 30 carries pushing his rushing total to 326 for the first 2 games of the season. The Cougars ran a whopping 98 offensive plays from scrimmage versus Texas.
