The TCU Horned Frogs travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma to face the 17th ranked Oklahoma St. Cowboys on Saturday with kickoff at 12:00 PM ET. Where have we decided to place our college football picks in this showdown?

According to current college football odds Oklahoma St. is a 7.0-point favorite. The game will be televised nationally by the Fox Network. The Cowboys defeated the Horned Frogs a season 36-14 and covered as a 6.5-point favorite.

Uncharted Waters for TCU

The TCU football program had been one of the most successful in the country over the last decade under the guidance of head coach Gary Patterson. Last season they were a mediocre by their standards 7-6, and this season they’re off to a relatively disappointing 3-3 start. If you consider the fact that this is a program that went a remarkable 47-5 from 2008 through 2011 then you can understand why the natives are getting a bit restless. Last week they were very unimpressive in a 27-17 home win over Kansas while not coming close to covering as a 24.0-point favorite. The TCU defense continued to play at a high level holding Kansas to just 198 yards of total offense. The stop unit is 16th nationally in total defense. The same can’t be said for the offense which has struggled for the better part of the year. TCU is a dismal 110th nationally in total offense averaging just 331.2 yards per game. Since 9/26/2009 TCU is a profitable 6-1 ATS in their 7 games as a road underdog including winning 5 of those 7 outright.

Recharging Cowboys

After suffering a devastating upset loss at West Virginia 30-21 as a 19.0-point favorite the Cowboys bounced back with a 33-29 home win over Kansas St. in their last game 2 weeks ago. However the win didn’t come without some anxious moments as they had to overcome a 29-23 deficit in the 4th quarter versus the 12.5-point underdog Wildcats. This is a Cowboys program that’s been absolutely money as a home favorite in recent years. Since 9/28/2011 they’re 12-2 ATS in their last 14 as a home favorite winning all 14 of those games outright by an average of 32.0 points per game. Their only 2 non-covers over that span have both been versus Kansas St.

Final Analysis

The Horned Frogs haven’t fared well when playing away from Fort Worth going 0-3 so far this season. The positive side for those looking to back TCU with their college football picks is that those 3 losses came versus 3 nationally ranked teams in LSU, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech with a small -7.7 point per game differential. Oklahoma St. has been unbeatable as a home favorite in recent years versus any team not named Kansas St. My personal feeling is to compete with the Cowboys in Stillwater you must possess the offensive firepower to do so considering the points they can put up against you. TCU lacks that type of offense this year, and the stellar Horned Frogs defense is bound to wear down late in the game. I have a very small lean on the home favorite in this spot, but a lean is about as far as I am willing to go with my sports picks here.
