The North Carolina Tar Heels and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets provided the highest scoring game in ACC history in last year’s meeting, but does this mean that we should look to the total with our college football picks?

Let’s take a closer look at the college football odds for this matchup at Bobby Dodd Stadium, with the opening kickoff scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Disappointing results

North Carolina is looking to win its league opener for just the second time in the last 11 years, while for a second straight season the program has had a week off to prepare for this matchup.

The Tar heels are 8-8 SU and 7-9 ATS against conference opponents since 2011, with the OVER going 11-5 in that situation.

Ground and pound

Georgia Tech continues to rely heavily on its explosive running attack, as it has opened the year with a 2-0 SUATS record—outgaining its opponents by 491 yards on the ground in those contests.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the Yellow Jackets are 7-3 SU and 8-2 ATS in September.

It’s important to point out that no school has rushed for more yards than Georgia Tech since 2008.

Plenty of weapons

College football handicappers will definitely have an interest in backing the Tar Heels, considering quarterback Bryn Renner has thrown for 56 touchdowns in this career, with two of those coming in last year’s 68-50 loss to the Yellow Jackets as 7.5-point home favorites.

That particular result ended up being the highest scoring game in ACC football history, while the OVER is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Atlanta.

Owning the series at this venue

The Yellow Jackets have won their last seven home games against the Tar Heels, while they’ve compiled a 6-1 SU and 4-2-1 ATS mark as favorites of 3.5 to 10 points the last two-plus seasons.

Head coach Paul Johnson is 16-2 SU during his career at Georgia Tech versus North Carolina teams, including a 4-1 mark in this particular series.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Yellow Jackets with their college football picks, as they’ve covered their last four games against the Tar Heels.
