The Michigan Wolverines avoided a major scare last week, as they prepare to take on the downtrodden Connecticut Huskies in primetime Saturday.

Let’s take a closer look at the college football odds for this non-conference matchup at Rentschler Field, with the opening kickoff scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.

Survive and advance

Michigan almost had its national title aspirations dashed in Week 3, as it picked up a 28-24 come-from-behind victory over the Akron Zips as 35.5-point home favorites, while going UNDER the betting total for the first time in three contests.

The Wolverines won the statistical battle by just two yards, as they clearly suffered a letdown after coming away with a victory over Notre Dame in primetime the previous week.

A bad football team

Connecticut is 0-2 SUATS this season, which is a bit surprising due to returning 13 starters from a season ago, as it looks to bounce back from a 32-21 defeat to the Maryland Terrapins as 4.5-point home underdogs last Saturday.

The Huskies have been outgained by 307 yards on the ground this season, while they’ve gone 10-16 SU and 7-16 ATS over the last two-plus campaigns.

On the road

College football handicappers might feel compelled to lay the points due to the Wolverines being 4-1 SUATS as road favorites since 2011, but it’s important to point out that this will be the program’s first game away from Michigan Stadium this season.

Michigan has also compelled a disappointing 4-9 SU record in true road openers since 2000.

A successful situation in the past

It’s clear that Connecticut is going to struggle this year, but the school has put together a 45-24 SU record versus non-conference foes during the regular season since 2002, while also going 34-22 following a loss over that span.

Doak Walker candidate Lyle McCombs has to gain over 100 yards for this team to stay within this number, as he entered the season with 2,011 rushing yards in this career.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Huskies with their college football picks, as they’ve gone 8-0 SUATS following back-to-back losses when playing in front of their fans.
