We’re going to examine Saturday’s college football contest between Marshall and Ohio. Go inside to read our insightful betting preview article which culminates with a point spread pick.
Marshall & Ohio Non-Conference Rivalry on Saturday
The Ohio Bobcats play in their home opener on Saturday against Marshall. The opening kickoff at Peden Stadium in Athens, Ohio is slated for 7:00 PM ET. These teams met a season ago in Huntington, West Virginia, and the Thundering Herd routed Ohio 44-14. This will be the sixth consecutive season that these schools have met on the gridiron, and Ohio came out on top in three of the previous five.
Drastic Line Movement
According to college football betting odds at TheGreek.com, Marshall opened as a 6.0 point favorite in this contest. Since that time, the Thundering Herd has dropped to a 3.5 point chalk. In my professional opinion, sharp players have acted quickly on the rest disparity between these teams. Ohio opened their season last Thursday (9/3) at Idaho. Meanwhile, Marshall opened at home this past Sunday (9/6) against Purdue. The Thundering Herd will not only be playing on three less days of rest, but also will be required to travel for this contest, and will be facing an opponent in their home opener.
Opening Game Results for Both Teams
Marshall relished the rare opportunity presented to them in last week’s opening game. It’s not very often that a Conference USA team gets to host a “Power Five Conference” opponent, let alone on national television. That’s exactly what occurred last week when Purdue of the Big Ten visited Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Even more telling was the fact that they were installed as a 7.0 point favorite to boot. That in itself speaks volumes regarding the current status of their football program, and the high degree of respect cast upon them by major sportsbooks. They didn’t disappoint the home faithful by winning and covering in a 41-31 victory.
Ohio traveled to Moscow, Idaho for their season opener. They came away with a convincing 45-28 win over the home standing Idaho Vandals, and easily covered as a 6.5 point favorite. The Bobcats racked up an impressive 489 yards of total offense. The quarterback tandem of Derrius Vick and J.D. Sprague went a combined 20-25 passing for 284 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Bobcats also displayed a productive rushing attack by amassing 205 yards on the ground, and averaging a superb 5.4 yards per attempt.
Obviously Ohio will have a huge edge in terms of rest on Saturday. The Bobcats have gone a perfect 12-0 straight up in their previous twelve non-conference home games. According to current (9/8) college football betting odds at major sportsbooks, Ohio is a 3.5 point home underdog across the board. They’ve gone a perfect 4-0 SU&ATS in their last four games as a home underdog.
Marshall won’t only be playing on shorter rest, but they’ll be vulnerable to a letdown spot on Saturday. After all, they’re coming off an emotional win in their home opener over a Big Ten opponent. Speaking of that win, you can certainly make a strong case that Marshall was very fortunate to come out on top in that contest. They were outgained by Purdue 454 to 397 and were beneficiaries of two interception returns for touchdowns.
I like the home underdog betting value in this game for one of my college football picks. Heritage provides the best price regarding this wager.
