The Ohio State Buckeyes play host to the Iowa Hawkeyes this weekend, and we believe that this matchup offers value for our college football picks. Find out where we are looking to place our money.

The Ohio State Buckeyes and Iowa Hawkeyes both went into bye weeks with a combined spread record of 6-1-1 through their last four contests. Saturday’s NCAAF action has the rivals meeting in Columbus, where the Buckeyes return to action as heavy ‘chalk.’

Gear up for this week's action with our College Football Picks: Week 8 Odds Report.

Buckeyes edge past Northwestern

Ohio State began this month with a 40-30 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats, cashing for my followers as a 6 ½-point road favorite. The Buckeyes pulled off the cover thanks to a bizarre fumble at the duel’s finish, capping off a stretch run of 13 unanswered points.

Buckeyes running back Carlos Hyde took in three touchdowns, marching for a season-high 168 yards (6.5 YPR). Hyde’s mate Braxton Miller connected 15-of-26 passes under center, finishing with 203 yards through the air.

The matchup’s combined 70 points jumped OVER the ‘total’ of 61, with both sides uniting for 45 first downs. Ohio State’s Bradley Roby returned a block punt for a touchdown, while Doran Grant snagged his season’s second interception.

Hawkeyes fall at home

The same day’s card saw Iowa log a 26-14 defeat against the Michigan State Spartans, failing to collect as a 1 ½-point home favorite. Hawkeyes quarterback Jake Rudock threw two interceptions in a 26-for-46 afternoon, while finding mates Damon Bullock and C.J. Fiedorowicz for one score each.

Bullock finished with a team-high 71 receiving yards, while Iowa’s offense controlled the ball for a meager 23 minutes. The Hawkeyes escaped with just three penalties (34 yards), while being held scoreless in the entire second half.

Iowa’s defense gave up 412 total yards, with 277 coming through the air. Buckeyes linebacker James Morris grabbed an interception for Michigan State’s sole turnover, while the battle’s 40 combined points leaped OVER the ‘total’ of 37.

Back the Hawkeyes as road dogs

College football odds opened Ohio State opened as a 17-point home favorite, with early sports picks on Iowa dropping the number a ‘hook’ to 16 ½. The weather forecast in Columbus calls for 47 degrees, with 10 mph winds and partly cloudy skies.

I am taking the points with Iowa here, adding Kirk Ferentz’ crew to my week’s card of college football picks.

Iowa’s setback to Michigan State finds the Hawkeyes looking to bounce back against a marquee foe, while going 2-0 ATS in its first pair of road matchups. The last two meetings between these rivals saw Ohio State come away with wins by three points, while the Hawkeyes cashed with a 1-0-1 spread mark.

Ohio State went through a span last season of being overvalued in Big Ten play - collecting ATS in its first two weeks of conference action, but barely pulling out some close calls in mid-stretch. The Buckeyes failed to collect as double-digit ‘chalk’ against the Indiana Hoosiers and Purdue Boilermakers, last October, surviving their rivals by a combined margin of 81-71.

Iowa came up big in its return from last year’s bye week, upsetting Michigan State in a 19-16 overtime win as an 8 ½-point road dog. Look for the Hawkeyes to collect again here, holding Ohio State’s weapons to some tight numbers.
