The Texas Tech Red Raiders reeled off their fifth straight victory with last weekend’s 54-16 thrashing of the Kansas Jayhawks, cashing as 16 ½-point road ‘chalk.’ Kliff Kingsbury’s crew returns home for Saturday’s battle with the Iowa State Cyclones.
Red Raiders crush Kansas
Texas Tech quickly erased an early 10-0 deficit in last Saturday’s triumph, moving the chains for 31 first downs. Red Raiders quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for a season-high 368 yards, while taking in one score with a 19-yard keeper.
Texas Tech’s wide out duo of Eric Ward and Jakeem Grant logged seven catches each, uniting for 214 receiving yards. Ward brought in a 25-yard touchdown strike, while running back DeAndre Washington scored twice from inside the five-yard line.
The Red Raiders’ defense held Kansas to 292 total yards, with just 72 coming on the ground (2 YPR). Texas Tech recovered three fumbles as part of the Jayhawks’ four turnovers, while converting 10-for-21 third downs.
Cyclones edged at home
Iowa State came away with a 31-30 defeat to the Texas Longhorns in last Thursday’s shootout, holding on to collect as a seven-point home dog. The Cyclones allowed a late one-yard score from Texas’ Case McCoy to decide the affair, while flagged for 10 penalties (118 yards).
Cyclones running back Aaron Wimberly notched a season-high 29 carries, rushing for 117 yards. The junior scored touchdowns from both the ground and air, including a 20-yard dash to give his side a 27-24 lead in the fourth quarter.
Iowa State controlled the ball for 35 minutes of possession, with wide receiver Quenton Bundrage leading his mates with five catches for 137 yards. The duel’s combined 61 points leaped above the ‘total’ of 54 ½, lifting the OVER to 3-0 in the Cyclones’ latest trio of contests.
Back Texas Tech as home ‘chalk’
Texas Tech opened as a 16-point home favorite on The Greek’s college football odds board, with early wagers on the Red Raiders lifting the number to 16 ½. The early weather forecast in Lubbock calls for a 65-degree day, with calm winds and partly cloudy skies.
I am laying the ‘chalk’ in this spot, adding Texas Tech to my week of sports picks.
The Red Raiders have piled in 38 PPG at home, while looking to run the score up again here. Last week’s win over Kansas brought Texas Tech to 2-1 ATS in its three spots as a double-digit favorite, while holding foes to 12 PPG in that span of affairs.
Iowa State comes in with a bit of extra rest, but is still reeling from the emotional drain of its close contest against Texas. The Cyclones are 0-4-1 ATS in their last five matchups against rivals with a winning record, while logging a 1-3 spread record in their most recent four road meetings with the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech is not overvalued here despite its winning streak, while going 6-0 ATS in its last six duels that followed a victory of more than 20 points. Look for the Red Raiders to not slow down, pulling away from the Cyclones and adding another cashed ticket for our Week 7 college football picks.College Football Pick: Texas Tech Red Raiders -16 ½ at The Greek
