The college football season has just started, but the first Saturday is yet to come. What are some good bets in terms of over-under totals? Three games appear here on the card.

UTEP Miners vs. Arkansas Razorbacks
This is a game in which the Razorbacks should win big, and because a large margin of victory is expected, a reasonably large point total should result from this game. It is true that Arkansas is missing some prime offensive players, a receiver and also featured running back Jonathan Williams. However, the Hogs are so physical and powerful that they can wipe out UTEP at the line of scrimmage and establish enough dominance in the trenches that they can score 38 to 42 points even without a few star players. UTEP does not play teams as good as Arkansas on a regular basis, and especially not on the road. The Miners will be in over their heads a little bit in this game. As long as UTEP is able to score a garbage touchdown or two in the fourth quarter after the Razorbacks have established a 30-point lead or thereabouts, this game should end up going over the number, with a score of something like 41-17 or 42-14.

Texas Longhorns vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Texas Longhorns have had so many problems with their offenses in recent years, first under previous head coach Mack Brown and then again last year in the first season of new head coach Charlie Strong’s reign in Austin. Tyrone Swoopes will be the starter for this game, but he has not inspired a lot of confidence in summer training camp. He is very likely to find it hard to play well in a road night game against a team with a defense that is supposed to be much improved from last season. Notre Dame’s defense got shredded last November because of an injury to a key player, linebacker Joe Schmidt. With a chance to regroup, the Fighting Irish should be very good on defense once again, as they were in September last season before October and early-November injuries hit.

Texas, while weak on offense, is not weak on defense. Strong and his defensive coordinator, Vance Bedford, teach their players extremely well and know how to put them in positions to make plays. It is doubtful that this game will approach 60 points. A score in the low 20s (around 45 total points) feels much more like the place where this game will end.

Arkansas State Red Wolves vs. USC Trojans
USC is loaded on offense this season, and against a smaller-conference team such as Arkansas State, USC should have no problems scoring over 50 points. As long as Arkansas State can score 17 or more points, this game is going to hit the over. Since USC, if it gets a 40-point lead in the fourth quarter, will certainly play guys who are way down on the depth chart, it’s a good bet that Arkansas State will score a few touchdowns and push this game over the number.
