The non-conference game between Louisiana Tech and Mississippi State provides great betting value as our Big Dog college football pick of the week.

Louisiana Tech vs. Mississippi State (-13.5), Saturday, October 17, NOON ET
In a battle of Bulldogs, Louisiana Tech travels to Starkville, Mississippi to face SEC member, Mississippi State.  It is rare that a team plays a non-conference game in the middle of their conference slate and has it circled on their calendar.  Yet, that is exactly the case for this visiting Tech team who is stepping up to face a big-named foe.

Under 3rd year HC Skip Holtz, the Tech Bulldogs turned around their fortunes last year with a 9-5 SU, 11-2 ATS season.  Along the way, they made their ATS mark by going 3-0 ATS in games against Power 5 schools.  This included covers against Oklahoma and Auburn and an outright Bowl victory against Illinois (35-18).  Already this season, they have traveled to Kansas St., where they took the Wildcats to OT on their very strong home field.  The eventual 39-33 LA Tech loss was good enough to easily cover the 10 point impost.  This is not unusual for either the LA Tech program, who is recently 7-1 ATS in non-conference games or for their 3rd year HC Holtz.  Dating to his time at ECU and USF, Holtz is now 39-18 ATS, when installed as the underdog.  Good news for the visitor is that RB Dixon (leg) has been upgraded to probable for this Saturday clash.  He will be needed to balance the offense, along with QB Driskel, a Florida transfer who is leading a passing game, averaging 320 PYPG.  That sparks an explosive Tech offense that is averaging 40 PPG and 494 YPG.  Clearly, LA Tech took their foot off the gas pedal last week against UTSA, when they were looking forward to this contest.

For Mississippi St., who is 4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS (same as LA Tech), this game does not have nearly the same significance.  This is a team who ascended to the top spot in the polls last season.  Yet a major retooling job is underway for the 7th year HC Mullen.  This year, he had just 4 starters returning to each side of the ball.  With 5 SEC games remaining on the slate, any kind of victory will do just fine for the home standing Bulldogs.  As a result, it is unlikely they go out of their way to get the “kill” against this CUSA entry.

Put the college football odds in your favor and join me with my college football pick on LA Tech as the Big Dog Game of the Week.
