Our NCAA football betting expert at SBR Picks is Ross Benjamin, and all he’s done so far is go 10-2 in that category with his selections. Read his informative analysis on Friday’s Connecticut/South Florida game which culminates with his free pick on this contest.
Friday Night Lights in the AAC
The South Florida Bulls will host the Connecticut Huskies at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on Friday. Kickoff time is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2. According to college football odds, South Florida is a 3.5 point favorite, and at the time of this writing there was no posted total. This will be the American Athletic Conference opener for both of these teams. These teams have met every season since 2005, and Connecticut has won 5 of the 9 meetings during that time. However, South Florida has defeated the Huskies in 3 of their last 4-meetings at home.
Huskies Desperately Need a Win
Connecticut opened the season with 3 home games and is off to a disappointing 1-2 start. They’re only win came versus Stony Brook, and they barely escaped by a score of 19-16 versus a FCS opponent. They were blown out by both BYU 49-17, and Boise St. 35-10. They also failed to cover in all 3-games. This upcoming game versus South Florida is one they’ll have a legitimate chance to win, and desperately need to do so. The Huskies have gone a dismal 2-11 SU&ATS in their last 13 as an away underdog.
South Florida Program in a Downward Spiral
This will be the 2nd year under former Western Kentucky head coach Willie Taggart. The Bulls have gone a dismal 3-12 under Taggart, and are a horrible 6-21 since the start of the 2012 season. It’s imperative they win at home this week versus a very beatable opponent. Especially considering their next 2-games will be at Wisconsin, and at home versus East Carolina. They figure to be a sizable underdog in both of those contests. Similar to Friday night’s opponent, they opened the season with 3 home games, lost 2 of those contests, and their only win came at the hands of a FCS opponent in a 36-31 versus Western Carolina. Their 2 losses were versus Maryland by a score of 24-17, and to North Carolina St. 38-21. The Bulls have gone 0-9 ATS in their last 9 as a home favorite, and have lost 6 of those 9 outright.
I can confidently predict that neither of these teams will be playing in a bowl game this season. However, since I’m assigned the game by SBR Picks, and have gone 10-2 so far this college football season, then we might as well keep it going. I’m going to go with the lesser of the two evils for our college football picks this one, and take the home favorite laying the small number.
