East Carolina Pirates

Thursday, November 3, 2016 11:15 PM GMT

In a battle of the coaching Montgomeries, the Pirates travel to Tulsa for this non-division AAC-West rivalry.  East Carolina has won this matchup 3 consecutive seasons. Joe Gavazzi provides his expert NCAAF Pick.

East Carolina vs Tulsa (-8) 8:00 ET

This is far from an East Carolina team of recent seasons. In fact, in the last 2+ years, East Carolina is now just 5-15 ATS in conference play. You can throw out last week’s victory vs. UConn, as the Huskies were an early-season Towel Tosser with a plodding offense and little energy. The 2 weeks prior to that, East Carolina had lost 31-19 at Cincinnati and 38-22 at USF. That makes them now 0-4 SU away from Greenville. Season-long issue for the Pirates has been a defense that allows 29/416, including 178/4.9 overland.

A Tulsa defense is on the same level as E. Carolina, allowing 32/422 for the 2nd year under Phil Montgomery (the former OC at Baylor). But, it is those offensive roots that led Tulsa from 2 to 6 wins in his first season and to 37/507 on offense that separates these teams today. With a 3-1 SU ATS conference record, they are now tied with Navy for divisional superiority. That tiebreaker comes next week at Annapolis. But, before they can qualify for that meeting, they well know they must take care of business today. Behind QB Evans and aided by the running slants of RB Flanders, Tulsa enters today with the momentum of 2 consecutive victories and 3 consecutive covers. They are now averaging 42/499 for the season with a 200 Club offense. That has played out each of the last 2 weeks in victories vs. Tulane (50-27) and Memphis (59-30). In each of those games, they have RUN AND PASSED for at least 234 yards, totaling 1,164 yards. Combined with their cover as 20 point dog at Houston 3 weeks ago, the Hurricane enters with coverage of 60 points in their most recent 3 games. They have been golden on this field this season with a mark of 4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS, totaling at least 493 yards in each outing. No fewer than 5 times this season have they run for at least 315 yards in a game!

Each week in the Pointspread Prognosis, I author a game in which one team THRILLS its fans by piling up the numbers. These games are 6-3 ATS for the year to date. Look for another one today, as the Golden Hurricane continues their positive momentum and storms into Annapolis next week for their showdown with Navy.
