The bowl season is reaching its crescendo. There are five bowl games on Friday, January 1, two of them in the state of Florida and the other three as part of the so-called New Year’s Six.

Citrus Bowl: Florida Gators vs. Michigan Wolverines
This is a game in which the month off following the end of the regular season should help both teams. However, with Florida, the defense was already solid, and with a backup quarterback (Treon Harris) in charge of the offense, it’s hard to say or define where the Gators’ ceiling of potential is. Just how much can one expect from the Gators when they don’t even have the ideal players at important positions, especially quarterback? Michigan is a little bit different. The Wolverines struggled on defense and improved on offense as the season went along, but in the finale against Ohio State, they were torn apart on both sides. Florida’s defense might be better than Michigan’s defense, but Michigan’s offense is better than Florida’s offense, and Michigan’s defense was just as good as Florida’s defense earlier in the season. If Michigan uses this month off to get better on defense, Florida might not have alternative ways of winning. Take Michigan here.

Fiesta Bowl: Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Ohio State Buckeyes
The key point to make here is that Ohio State finally learned how to play together in the season finale against Michigan. The Buckeyes could have fallen apart and allowed the locker room to get away from them. Yet, running back Ezekiel Elliott decided to make peace with head coach Urban Meyer. He responded to a bad loss against Michigan State by playing one of his all-time best games against Michigan. Ohio State players really believed in each other in that Michigan game. They probably didn’t (fully) do the same until then. The Buckeyes really are a team on a mission. When you cross a barrier such as that Michigan game, you should play with more confidence. Take Ohio State with your college football picks.

Sugar Bowl: Ole Miss Rebels vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys
This is a game in which the main thing to note is that Ole Miss pass rusher Robert Nkemdiche is out for behavioral reasons. That will limit the Rebels’ defense in a game played in a domed stadium. Oklahoma State should exist in a comfort zone on offense all game long. That should be enough to help the Cowboys cover the number. Ole Miss should score a fair amount of points, but Oklahoma State should be right there, thanks to the two-quarterback team of Mason Rudoolph (the throwing specialist) and J.W. Walsh, who is more of a running quarterback. Ole Miss is also a team which got beaten by Memphis. The Rebels do not appear to be strong enough to cover this spread. Go with Oklahoma State on the college football odds.
