The East Carolina Pirates really feel they let one get away last week. The Connecticut Huskies were simply blown away by a better opponent. Which will be our college football pick?

The East Carolina season has taken a negative turn. The Pirates had so many chances to beat Temple and knock the Owls from the ranks of the unbeaten last Thursday at home. They missed a field goal and committed several personal foul penalties. They had one punt partially blocked and another punt fully blocked. They committed all sorts of mistakes. Yet, they still led by a 14-10 score in the middle of the fourth quarter and had the ball near midfield. Then they fumbled, and Temple – given just half a field – was able to score for a 17-14 lead. Then came a blocked punt, and Temple eventually scored to make the final 24-14. East Carolina threw away an opportunity, and now is left to try to pick up the pieces, knowing that it has to be a lot more disciplined.

Connecticut just couldn’t get anything to go its way in a 37-13 loss to Cincinnati. Connecticut has been operating all year, and actually throughout the past couple of seasons, in the face of profound limitations on offense. When only one side of the ball can reasonably expect to do much of anything, it’s hard for the other side of the team to carry all of the workload. This just can’t be continued over the course of the season. The dam breaks and everything falls apart. This is what happened against Cincinnati. UConn’s defense just couldn’t stand in the ring for 60 minutes. Not even close. The Huskies need to have a little more from their offense at each stage of a game. If they don’t, they really don’t have much of a chance.

Line Moves
East Carolina started as a 7.5-point favorite, and those college football odds have remained in place. We’ll see where this goes, but one should probably expect the line to move up as the reality of UConn’s poor offense becomes clearer.

Notable Injuries
East Carolina has wide receiver DaQuan Barnes listed as questionable with a hip injury. Offensive lineman Tre Robertson is questionable with a concussion. Defensive back Corey Seargent is questionable with a leg injury. Defensive end Mike Myers is questionable with a hip injury. Wide receiver Jimmy Williams is out indefinitely with an ankle injury. Linebacker Davaris Brunson is out indefinitely with a knee injury. Linebacker Jeton Beavers is out indefinitely with an ACL injury. Running back Marquez Grayson is out indefinitely with a foot injury. Strong safety Terrell Richardson is questionable with a hip injury.

Connecticut has starting quarterback Bryant Shirreffs listed as probable for this game with an undisclosed condition. Wide receiver Dhameer Bradley is out indefinitely with a leg injury.

Handicapping The Game
The Connecticut offense has so few options that East Carolina can contain the Huskies and eventually wear them down as the second half moves on. Take ECU with your college football picks.
