The Gamecocks are playing their first game of the season. Last year, they went 10-2 overall, and went 8-0 in their own small-division conference in the FCS. This is by all accounts a strong FCS program, one which made the playoffs but got knocked out in the first round.
Auburn has to be feeling very good about itself after beating Louisville in a highly anticipated opener in a neutral site (Atlanta). Auburn picked up a new defensive coordinator, former Florida head coach Will Muschamp, in the attempt to bolster its defense, which really struggled last season. Muschamp used to be the defensive coordinator at Auburn several years ago, so he enjoys some familiarity with the school and is seen as an asset in the world of recruiting, not just gameday coaching on defense. The investment in Muschamp definitely paid off against Louisville. Auburn hounded Louisville’s offensive line and prevented the Cardinals from ever being able to establish their running game. The Tigers were able to build a 31-17 lead with help from a defensive touchdown, and they held on to win, 31-24.
What’s concerning for Auburn is that quarterback Jeremy Johnson threw multiple interceptions. He did not look sharp and did not make good decisions. That will have to change as the season goes along.
This game does not have a listed line, since it is a game between an FBS school and an FCS school. But keep checking with SBR college football odds board for updates.
Auburn might rest its best pass rusher, Carl Lawson, who had a massive day against Louisville last Saturday and was always in the Cardinals’ backfield. Lawson is dealing with a hip injury, and with the meat of the SEC season still to come, it would be prudent for Auburn to give him the week off if he’s not feeling up to it and if the injury is nagging to the point that it would either limit his mobility or put him at risk for a worse injury (or an aggravation of the same one).
Defensive linemen Jaunta’vius Johnson has a knee injury and is questionable. Offensive lineman Jordan Diamond is questionable with an undisclosed condition. Defensive lineman Prince Tega Wanogho is questionable with a leg issue. Defensive back T.J. Davis is questionable with a knee injury.
Handicapping The Game
The Tigers will win. By how much is the question. Resting players and giving time to people way down the depth chart will probably keep the margin under 40 points. This probably will not be a 55-point kind of blowout. Keep that range in mind for this matchups college football pick, as we don’t have a posted spread on this game yet.
