The Arkansas Razorbacks and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights meet in Week 4 of NCAAF action. Where should bettors look to place their college football picks in this battle?

CFB Preview-Arkansas vs. Rutgers

The Arkansas Razorbacks make a rare trip to the northeast when they take on Rutgers at High Point Solutions Stadium in New Brunswick, New Jersey on Saturday with kickoff slated for 3:30 PM ET. According to college football odds, this line opened with Arkansas as a 1.0-point favorite. It’s since moved to Rutgers being a 1.5-point favorite. My football odds service shows that 58% of sports betting money thus far has been wagered on Rutgers. The total opened at 45.5 and is now currently 44.5 with 65% of public money bet on this game to go under the total.

Take a look at my College Football Picks: Opening Odds Report for Week 4.

Injured Starting Quarterbacks

Arkansas has got off to a fast 3-0 start under the guidance of new head coach Brett Bielema. That in itself is very encouraging considering they were just 4-8 a year ago.  Unfortunately starting quarterback Austin Allen is extremely doubtful for the Rutgers game after injuring his shoulder in the win over Southern Mississippi last week. He will likely be replaced by junior A.J. Derby who came in after Allen’s injury and went 4-6 for 36 yards. The good news is the Razorbacks can lean on a rushing attack that’s been dynamic in their first 3 games averaging 294.3 yards per game. The defense has been solid in allowing just an average of 12.7 points and 253.0 yards per game. This will be the Razorbacks first road game of the season. Arkansas will try to change a bit of history on Saturday. Undefeated college football road teams that are playing in their 4th game of the season, and they played their first 3 games at home are 0-10 straight up since 1995. The road teams lost those 10 games by an average of 11.8 points per game.

Rutgers is 2-1 on the season and will be looking to complete a 3-game sweep on their current home stand with a win on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights opened the season with a heartbreaking 52-51 loss at Fresno St. They followed that up with two home blowout wins over Norfolk St. and Eastern Michigan. They also have an injury issue with their starting quarterback. Gary Nova had to leave early in the last game versus Eastern Michigan after sustaining a concussion. If he can’t go it will be senior Chas Dodd that gets the call. Dodd has sufficient playing experience going 267-459 (58.2%) with 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in his career. Unfortunately he’s only attempted 11 passes the last 2 seasons after losing the starting job to Nova.

Final Analysis

Considering there’s a high probability that both starting quarterbacks will be unavailable for this game, and both teams have displayed very strong running games in the early part of the season, I’m anticipating a low scoring affair that goes right down to the wire.
