Saturday’s NCAAF slate has the Arizona State Sun Devils meeting the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium. The OVER has cashed at a combined 7-1 clip through the last four weeks of action involving these foes, but will the octane keep up here?
Take a look at SBR's College Football Picks: Opening Odds Report for Week 6.
Sun Devils soar at home
Arizona State pulled away in last weekend’s 62-41 triumph over the USC Trojans, cruising as a 3 ½-point home favorite. Sun Devils quarterback Taylor Kelly threw for 351 yards and three touchdowns, making the most of his squad’s 26 minutes with the ball.
Arizona’s Marion Grice ran for two scores out of the backfield, finishing with 63 yards on a season-low 12 carries. Grice’s mate Jaelen Strong caught a team-high seven receptions, notching over 100 receiving yards for a third straight game.
ASU’s defense allowed 542 total yards, with 295 coming through the air. Sun Devils safety Alden Darby snagged two of his side’s three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.
Irish outgunned by Sooners
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish logged its second loss in four games with last Saturday’s 35-21 defeat to the Oklahoma Sooners, failing to collect as a 3 ½-point home dog. The Irish defense surrendered 450 yards, allowing the Sooners to move the sticks for 25 first downs.
Irish running back George Atkinson notched a season-high 148 rushing yards on 14 carries, including an 80-yard touchdown dash. Notre Dame’s Tommy Rees was held to a 9-for-24 passing day under center, while finding mates Troy Niklas and T.J. Jones for one score each.
Rees and Co. came away with a 4-for-12 mark in third-down conversion, while the contest’s combined 56 points landed above the ‘total’ of 50. Notre Dame was flagged for eight penalties (77 yards), while Rees tossed three interceptions for the matchup’s sole trio of turnovers.
Back the UNDER on Saturday
College football odds opened Arizona State as a 5 ½-point favorite, while first setting the ‘total’ at 62. The Sun Devils resume Pacific-12 play next week with a home date against the Colorado Buffaloes, while Notre Dame is idle in its bye week.
I am backing the UNDER in this duel, adding this wager to my value play on Notre Dame as a side.
Arizona State could see its emotions drop in this spot, following last week’s uplifting win over USC – that notably resulted in the firing of Trojans coach Lane Kiffin. The Sun Devils were held to a season-low of 28 points in their sole matchup away from home, two weeks ago, against the Stanford Cardinal.
Notre Dame has had its inconsistencies, but will need a tight duel here on the stage of the “Jerry Dome” to come away with a victory. The Irish have seen the UNDER cash at a 19-7 clip in their last 26 matchups against Pacfic-12 foes, with this marquee affair having another high ‘total’ thanks to the public’s interest.
