App State returns home to defend "The Rock" against an overmatched ODU team they beat down 49-0 last year. Our expert capper provides his insight and his free college football pick.

ODU Monarchs vs App St Mountaineers
Appalachian State almost shocked the college football world again last Thursday night in Knoxville Tennessee nine years to the day since they knocked off the mighty Michigan Wolverines in the Big House. The Mountaineers went toe to toe with what many expect to be the best team in the SEC East. The Sunbelt conference contenders controlled the game in multiple facets but ended up dropping a heartbreaker in overtime. Scott Satterfield’s team now must regroup and take on a regional rival in Old Dominion. This could be seen as a classic letdown spot for App St, but there are important factors pointing towards Appalachian State to bounce back in the win column and do it by the margin. Currently, the College Football Odds board has the Mountaineers at -21, while the O/U 54.5.

First, Old Dominion put up over 50 points the opening week. Yes, that is a pretty number, although put it into context of who the Monarchs were facing. They were up against an FCS foe, also keep in mind not every FCS team is on equal playing ground. Hampton is far from a winning program, actually, they only posted one winning season since 2011, they also lost 24 seniors off of last year’s roster. Even though ODU hung half a hundred in week one, their week two opponent is a different breed of cat.

Second, there is an argument for this being a letdown spot for Appalachian State, being the week after a close upset of Tennessee on national TV and the week prior to Miami coming to Boone. This is all true, but I strongly advise pumping the brakes on blindly following this betting angle. I have followed the Mountaineers closely the past three years and a few things stand out: This is a very well coached team. When you look back at App State’s 3 losses over their last 19 games dating back to the 2014 season. They are all to superiorly talented teams in Clemson and Arkansas State last year, also Tennessee this year. This is not a team that I have witnessed not show up. The foundation of App St is very well built led by a smart quarterback that does not turn the ball over very often.

I am not the biggest fan of laying 3 touchdowns, but given the scenario of Appalachian State in their first home game against a regional rival who they steamrolled last year on the road 49-0 (It could have been a lot worse). Plus, the extra time to prepare for App combined with the short week ODU must deal with considering their week 1 matchup vs Hampton was pushed back to Sunday due to weather. For my college football expert pick, I recommend a wager on the home favorites to defend the rock and do it in convincing fashion.

Free College Football Pick: App St Mountaineers -21
Best Line Offered: at 5Dimes

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3028022, "sportsbooksIds":[19,169,123,1275], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]
