Georgia Tech – fresh off a division title and then a big Orange Bowl win over Mississippi State – tries to win the ACC championship and make the College Football Playoff.
Why Alcorn State Will Win
There’s a lot to be said for the Braves. They have been picked as the preseason favorite to win their division in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), with Grambling being the other team. Alcorn State is coming off a very strong 2014 season in which the team scored at least 31 points in 11 of its 13 games. The Braves won 10 of those 11 games and lost on the two occasions when their offense was held under 30 points. Alcorn State scored at least 52 points in six games last year, and at least 40 points in eight games. This team fielded a very consistent offense and never lost any game by more than a margin of one score (seven points). Given that Alcorn State can move the ball so well and score at a moment’s notice from anywhere on the field, Georgia Tech has to be alert on defense. The Yellow Jackets’ defense practices against the triple-option running game the team uses throughout the season, but Alcorn State’s offense is mostly a passing offense. That could very easily give Georgia Tech problems and put the Jackets in the arena where they’re not familiar with the opponent’s playing style. If Alcorn State can score a few early touchdowns and make Georgia Tech’s defense doubt itself, the Braves could get the jump on the Yellow Jackets and create a sense of panic on the part of the home team as the game moves along. This game could develop in ways that will benefit Alcorn State.
Keep in mind that in recent years, Georgia Southern and other teams not expected to seriously threaten Georgia Tech on the road have in fact come close to winning. Don’t think that Alcorn State, being in the FCS, is thereby automatically going to get blown out.
One more detail to note: Georgia Tech replaces most of its running backs and receivers from last season. The Yellow Jackets’ offense should be good by the end of the season, but Georgia Tech is probably going to be sluggish in its opener, as it brings a lot of new players into its lineup.
Why Georgia Tech Will Win
Georgia Tech isn’t just an FBS team playing a lower-division FCS team at home. It’s a lot more than that. Georgia Tech won the ACC Coastal Division last year. The Yellow Jackets almost beat Florida State in the ACC Championship Game. They crushed Mississippi State of the SEC in the Orange Bowl. They were extremely good, and they bring quarterback Justin Thomas back for another year. Having the right quarterback in the fold for 2015 should give this team all the stability and consistency it will need. On defense, Georgia Tech’s strength up front should be too much for Alcorn State to handle.
Alcorn State would have given a lot of FBS teams, even from the bigger conferences, some problems. Georgia Tech is too strong, though. The Yellow Jackets are worth adding to your College Football Picks as contenders to win the the ACC championship this year .
It’s hard to find a betting line for this game so keep your eyes on the College Football Odds page. Here you have an FBS team taking on an FCS team so expect the line to be massive. You’ll probably be able to find a line closer to game time at 5Dimes. Even so, take the Yellow Jackets.
