SBR sports betting expert Ross Benjamin was 7-2 with his college football picks last week. That makes his record 23-11 (67.6%). Today, he presents a betting preview on Thursday’s nationally televised game.

 ESPN Thursday Night College Football

Pittsburgh (5-2/2-1 ACC)) will host #25 Virginia Tech (5-2/3-1 ACC) on Thursday night in a pivotal ACC Coastal Division battle. Pittsburgh has gone 2-0 SU&ATS against Virginia Tech over the past 2 seasons. At the time of this writing, college football betting odds at shows Virginia Tech as a 3.5-point road favorite, and they’ve yet to post a total.

Dominant Defense and Strong Running Game

Virginia Tech has certainly displayed a winning formula under their new head coach Justin Fuentes. They’ve possessed a powerful offense running attack, and in addition to being dominate defensively. The Hokies are #11 nationally in total defense while allowing just 302.0 yards per game, and are also #16 in scoring by giving up only 17.9 points per contest. Virginia Tech’s balanced offensive attack has been keyed by a running game that averages 197.6 yards per game.

Nearly Perfect

Pittsburgh has sustained 2 losses this season, and they’ve come by a combined 8 points. Both of those defeats came on the road, and were against quality opponents. They lost 45-38 at Oklahoma State, and a Cowboys tie-breaking touchdown with just 1:28 left to play was the difference. During a 37-36 loss at North Carolina, the Tar Heels scored a game-winning touchdown with a mere 0:02 left. On a positive note, the Panthers are an unscathed 4-0 at home this season, and that bodes well considering their underdog status in this upcoming contest.

Final Analysis and Pick

Which Virginia Tech road team will show up? The one that lambasted North Carolina 34-3 at Chapel Hill, or the other that lost 31-17 to Syracuse as a massive 22.5-point road favorite. Either way, this has all the makings of an extremely close, and down to the wire kind of game. I’ll have an early lean toward the home underdog, and one of my college football week 9 predictions will be indicative of that notion.
