No. 14 West Virginia is one of the biggest favorites on the board in Week 10 of NCAA action on Saturday as the Mountaineers are -34.5 (total 55) on BetOnline college football odds vs. terrible Kansas. But could WVU be caught in a trap?

Jayhawks In Big 12 Basement

Ah, poor Kansas (1-7, 0-5 Big 12) as it's perhaps the worst Power 5 football program in the  nation right now but at least college basketball season is right around the corner and the Jayhawks are a Top-5 preseason team and national championship contender. Realistically, KU's only chance of a football win this year will be next Saturday at home vs. Iowa State.

Kansas was predictably clobbered 56-3 last week at No. 16 Oklahoma. All of KU's losses this season but one (24-23 to TCU) have been by at least 16 points. The Jayhawks allowed 538 yards to the Sooners, including 267 rushing, and managed just 170 of their own. That's the fewest yardage allowed by OU this season. It was KU's 17th straight Big 12 loss and 42nd in a row overall on the road.

On the season, Kansas ranks 124th nationally in scoring (19.4 ppg) and 120th in scoring defense (39.3 ppg). Other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln? Since I'm a glass half-full guy, I'll tell you that Kansas ranks first in the Big 12 in third-down defense in allow just 35.3 percent conversions. And it ranks first in the conference in fewest penalty yards per game. Defensive end Dorance Armstrong Jr. leads the Big 12 with eight sacks. Oh, and KU's punter Cole Moos is pretty good and a Ray Guy Award candidate.

Kansas is 2-6 ATS on college football odds and 2-6 O/U.

Mountaineers' Playoff Hopes Gone

Week 9 was terrible for the Big 12 with unbeatens West Virginia and Baylor both losing. The Mountaineers were up to No. 10 in the country but were handled pretty easily 37-20 at unranked Oklahoma State. WVU outgained the Cowboys 421-358 but they also gave it away three times to zero turnovers for OSU. All three turnovers led to Cowboys points, 17 total.

Mountaineers QB Skyler Howard was responsible for all the turnovers (two picks one fumble). West Virginia leading rusher Rushel Shell didn't play in the second half due to a leg injury and he is questionable this week. He has 503 yards and five touchdowns rushing.

Frankly, I think WVU was always overrated as it had played a very weak schedule entering last week, facing nary a ranked opponent. Now the Mountaineers have no shot at reaching the College Football Playoff but they can still take the Big 12 title and reach a major bowl game  by winning out. It's looking likely that the Big 12 will miss out on the playoff entirely for a second straight season. WVU is 3-4 ATS on college football picks and 2-5 O/U.

West Virginia is 4-1 vs. Kansas since joining the Big 12. Last year, the Mountaineers lost 49-0 in Lawrence. They had three 100-yard rushers for the first time since 1969. Kansas had only managed 221 yards of total offense. But I like KU to cover here simply because WVU is likely to be flat off its first loss.
