The Auburn Tigers travel to Davis Wade Stadium, home of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, at high noon on Saturday. Let’s see what the college football odds makers are hanging on this SEC showdown.

Auburn (3-2 SU, 4-1 ATS) vs. Mississippi State (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS)

The Tigers have been a great bet for all of those who have blindly backed them in their college football picks this season. Auburn has covered the college football odds in four of five games with the latest being a 58-7 thumping last week of Louisiana-Monroe in front of a raucous Auburn crowd. The Tigers were installed as 32-point favorites but had that number covered midway through the third quarter as quarterback Sean White passed for a pair of touchdowns and 239 yards while running back Kerryon Johnson racked up 146 yards and two trips into the end zone, en route to the victory.

Mississippi State began the season with a stunning 21-20 home loss to little South Alabama as 28-point favorites. They bounced back with a solid 27-14 victory over South Carolina and covered the eight-point impost in the process. Their last two contests have been on the road with a loss to SEC rival LSU and then scored a road 47-35 win over U-Mass but didn’t come close to covering the 23-point spread. It appears as though the Bulldogs get up for the big games but take the weaker teams for granted. If they stay true to form then they should be “up” again for a conference game against a traditionally tough opponent in Auburn.

The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers the past two seasons with a 38-23 home victory in 2014 and last season notched a 17-9 win at Auburn. But Saturday afternoon the teams take to the gridiron at Mississippi State and the Bulldogs are 1-1 both straight up and against the spread at home this season. Meanwhile, this will be the first road game for the Tigers and they will look to keep Mississippi State QB Nick Fitzgerald contained. The Bulldogs quarterback poses a dual threat but unlike the Tigers’ offense, he is the only real threat.

Let’s look for the Tigers defense to have a much better time of limiting both the points and field position of the opposing offense than the Bulldogs. Auburn can chew up the clock and wear defenses flat out. Though I am never crazy about laying points on the road sometimes you just can’t help it.
