Our college football handicapper had Maryland all wrong last week as the Terps were routed at Michigan. This Saturday, another highly-ranked Big Ten opponent visits College Park and Maryland is +28.5 on college football odds vs. Ohio State.

Schedule Not Kind For Terps

Maryland continues a brutal series in its schedule as they get No. 6 Ohio State at home a week after traveling to No. 2 Michigan. I previewed the Maryland last week, incorrectly concluding that the Terps' strong running game could slow down the game enough where the possibility of covering a 31-point spread on college football odds had value. That, and Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh playing one of his old assistants in D.J. Durkin. Final score: Michigan 59, Maryland 3.

Maryland only gained 78 net yards on the ground against Michigan, which is tragically below the 252-yard average the Terps were averaging entering the game. That’s exactly how you get blown out at the end of the day. So can Maryland rebound at all against an equally tough Ohio State team?

Likely not as the Terps' performance against the Michigan defense was a good litmus test for how they will perform against a top rushing defense. Ohio State only allows 119.2 rushing yards per game and has given up just rushing touchdowns all season. Maryland also lost its leading running back, sophomore Ty Johnson, to injury last week and he is questionable for this game.

The chance for Maryland to switch it up and go to the passing game is also in doubt as starting QB Perry Hills was knocked out of the game against Michigan and is questionable this week. Senior Caleb Rowe came in to finish the game and went 12-for-23 with two interceptions. If Hills can’t go he could get the start Saturday.

Buckeyes Off Huge Win

Ohio State comes into this game after crushing Nebraska 62-3 last week, a complete dismantling of the No. 10 team in the country and an easy cover on college football picks. Ohio State needed that style win for its College Football Playoff ranking as OSU is at No. 5 ready to gain one of the Top 4 spots should one of those teams slip up. A danger here is that Ohio State could be looking forward to its all-important matchup with Michigan and take Maryland lightly. I don’t see that happening, though.

In some aspects, Ohio State’s offense is even more dynamic than Michigan’s, so I don’t see this game staying close for long as Maryland will have a hard time scoring at all. Lay the chalk on the road here.
