Virginia Tech is a top NCAAF pick against the spread  versus Pitt Thursday night, as well as App. State over Georgia Southern, each game critical to the unfolding of conference titles.

Virginia Tech (-3.5) vs Pittsburgh

Pitt has allowed 30 points or more in five of its last six games against Power 5 opponents, and the Hokies present a very tough matchup. Both teams are great at stuffing the run, the Panthers yield 3.3 yards and Va. Tech 3.0 per carry. Each program also ranks in the top 13 nationally in run play percentage, so going to the air will be a reluctant venture. The Hokies will transition much better to the passing game, though. Pitt is horrendous in the secondary, allowing 328.8 passing yards per game (124th) to FBS opponents. The Panthers 1-9 ATS under head coach Pat Narduzzi, and the OVER 6-1 in their seven games this season. Expect the trends to continue down the same path. Projected score: Virginia Tech 37-28

Appalachian State (-4.5) vs Georgia Southern

App. State’s defense is terrific, especially against the run. Georgia Southern’s spread option attack, however, will give coach Scott Satterfield’s unit all it can handle housing some of the best playmakers in the Sun Belt conference. The Eagles play three different quarterbacks, and own a bevy of talented running backs. Defensively, Georgia Southern will stuff the box and force App. State to the air. A balanced attack is right up the Mountaineers’ alley, having gone to the pass early and often in their last few games. Wide receiver Shaedon Meadors, in fact, has 16 catches for 267 yards over the last three contests

The Deeper than Hate rivalry has seen the combined score hit or go over 44 in seven of the last 10 years. At least one team has put up 31 points or more in all but two during this span. Georgia Southern needs to win this to stay alive for a Sun Belt title—a loss will drop it two games behind the Mountaineers and Troy for top spot. We like App. State here on the side, and the OVER 44 points. Projected score: App. State 31-21

Ohio vs Toledo (-17)

Veteran head coach Frank Solich has his Ohio defense playing quality football. The unit has allowed 28 points or fewer in every game minus the opener, and held five of eight opponents below their projected team total. Toledo, however, owns one of the most efficient offenses in college football; its 7.0 yards per play ranks seventh nationally. The Rockets have put up 31 points or more in every game this season.

The key to covering the spread will be the Bobcats’ ability to run. Toledo allows 4.6 yards per carry, the same number gained per contest for Ohio, which ranks third in the MAC. Toledo is in no danger of losing the contest, but Ohio’s stout D-line and rushing attack will keep it close enough to beat the spread. Projected Score: Toledo 33-20
