It’s mostly a quiet week on the college football scene as most of the teams are either done or preparing for bowl games. However, there are a couple of under-the-radar college football picks.

Richmond Spiders vs. Illinois State Redbirds

College Football Pick: Illinois State -12
Best Line Offered: at 5Dimes

Winning at Illinois State is never an easy task and that’s why they’re favored by so much in this spot. They’ve won 20 straight at Hancock Stadium by an average of 24.7 points.

The crux of this game will come down to Richmond’s run defense and what it can do. Illinois State has a healthy three-pronged attack on offense that features on stellar running back Marshaun Coprich, dual threat quarterback Tre Roberson and receiver Anthony Warrum. If Richmond wants to pull off this upset, they’ll have to contain Illinois State’s ground game. They’ve allowed just 93.7 rushing yards over their last three but my main concern is that they allowed 172.3 rushing yards per game over their first nine contests. They’re also 10th in their conference (CAA) against the pass.

Given the home-field advantage and the fact that the Richmond defense seems a bit challenged (even though they’ve played well recently), I’ll lay the points with my college football picks here. We haven’t seen much movement on the line since it opened at -12 but that’s where I’ll take Illinois State.

Charleston Southern Buccaneers vs. Jacksonville State Gamecocks

College Football Pick: Jacksonville State -10.5
Best Line Offered: at BetOnline

We’ve got an interesting matchup in this one as the top-ranked Gamecocks take on Charleston Southern under the Friday night lights. The Gamecocks have a FCS-best 10-game winning streak on the line in this spot, so it’s fairly clear that they come in with plenty of momentum. While Charleston Southern is ninth-ranked, they are no slouches. They are also undefeated in FCS play.

The Gamecocks are a really good, well-balanced team and that figures to be a problem for a banged up Charleston Southern squad. The main issue for the Bucs is they are likely to be down to their third-string quarterback here. Starting quarterback Austin Brown and backup Kyle Copeland are not looking good for this matchup as both were forced to leave the game against The Citadel. That leaves junior Daniel Croghan to start.

Some will say this is an offense-versus-defense matchup as CSU has the second-ranked defense in the FCS, giving up just 266.6 yards per game. However, the Gamecocks had one of the best defenses in the FCS too, allowing just 277.1 yards per game. They held six opponents to 13 points or less. As for their offense, they rank fourth in the FCS, averaging 514.4 yards per game.

Jacksonville State opened up this line as a 10-point favorite and these college football odds have crept up to 10.5. I’ll lay the points in this one as Jacksonville State is the better team and is in better shape.
