The Tulsa Golden Hurricane are the runaway consensus college football pick for the third annual Miami Beach Bowl. Do the Central Michigan Chippewas stand a chance?

Record: 11-13-2 ATS, 1-1 Totals

You can't have too many college football bowl games. The more of these year-end showcases the NCAA cranks out, the more opportunities we have to load up on college football picks, and these bowl games usually give us the softest lines of the season. But we've got a tricky one coming up Monday, December 19 (2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) at the third annual Miami Beach Bowl, live from Marlins Park in Miami.

Here's the rundown: The mighty Tulsa Golden Hurricane (9-3 SU, 8-4 ATS), second place in the AAC West, will take on the less-mighty Central Michigan Chippewas (6-6 SU, 5-7 ATS), who finished fifth in the MAC West. Tulsa's favored by 11.5 points on our NCAAF odds board, and at press time, 95 percent of bettors are riding the Hurricane. Must be a deadbolt lock, right?

Black Monday

If only things were that easy. Pinning down a game between two teams who haven't faced each other since 1987 is going to require more than just math; the projections I've seen for the Miami Beach Bowl are all over the map. So are the larger FBS bowl betting trends from year to year.

2015: Faves 25-16 ATS, OVER 26-15
2014: Dogs 24-15 ATS, OVER 23-15-1
2013: Dogs 19-16 ATS, UNDER 21-14
2012: Faves 20-15 ATS, UNDER 19-15-1
2011: Faves 18-16-1 ATS, UNDER 19-16
2010: Faves 20-13 ATS, OVER 17-16
2009: Dogs 20-14 ATS, UNDER 19-15
2008: Dogs 18-16 ATS, UNDER 21-13

If there's one over-arching narrative we can hang our hat on, it's with the totals. Two years is a small sample size, granted, but scoring has been on the rise in recent years, from 26.8 points per team per game in 2005 to 29.7 points in 2015. This year's average: 29.1 points. Aw, man. It was such a good narrative, too.

In turbulent times like these, we return to first principles here at the home office. If the early action is on Tulsa, it's probably sharp action, so let's ride those coattails and see if the favorites make it a perfect 3-0 ATS at the Miami Beach Bowl.
