Joe Gavazzi's weekly college football picks of rivalry games have had a stellar 5-1 record so far. This week he searches to extends that record even further with his selection on the Central Michigan vs Northern Illinois matchup.

Central Michigan (-2) vs Northern Illinois 3:30 ET

Oh, how the mighty have fallen!  A battered and bruised NIU team backed their way into a 5th consecutive MAC West crown last season.  The Huskies simply ran out of gas down the stretch, being slaughtered by Bowling Green in the MAC playoff game and Boise St. in their Bowl game by combined scores of 89-21. To begin this season, the schedule maker asked the Huskies to first play a midnight body time game at Wyoming (a 40-34 OT loss), followed by a quick turnaround in the heat and humidity of S. Florida (a 48-17 loss to the Bulls).

Next up was hosting the powerful ground game of San Diego St., who outrushed the Huskies 281-157 in a 42-28 victory on this field.  Operating with the loss of starting QB Hare, the Huskies had nothing left in their tank as they reached the nadir of their discontent in a 28-23 loss as 7 point home favorite to FCS member, W. Illinois. That made it 0-7 SU ATS for NIU, as they prepared to face the conference portion of their schedule and defend their 5-time crown as divisional champion.  This bureau, however, successfully called the turn and has been right there to profit from the extraordinary value, as the Huskies bounced Ball 31-24, gaining 653 yards.  And, then they covered vs. division favorite, W. Michigan, last week, putting up a balanced 200+ yards both running and passing for the 3rd consecutive week.  With newfound QB Maddie at the controls, NIU will have plenty of hunger when they face division rival, C. Michigan.

As you might expect, Northern rarely lost a league game in their outstanding 5-year run.  In fact, as they lined up to face this C. Michigan team last year, they were on a run of 41-4 SU in league play.  Only 2 of those losses had come in the previous 3 years.  The most recent was in 2014 to C. Michigan (34-17).  It set up a huge revenge opportunity for the Huskies, as they kicked off their 2015 league season.  We were right there to take advantage with a Top of the Ticket play with the Huskies a miniscule one-point road favorite.  When the smoke cleared, NIU had double rushed Central 211-93, but fell victim to 4 TOs, eventually losing the contest (29-19).  Today, they appear on the betting line as a home underdog for the first time since Lassie was a puppy, while playing with double revenge and coming off yet another rare conference loss.

Lots of respect for Central, who is 4-2 SU for the season, behind 2nd year HC Bonamego and the passing of QB Rush, who has a 15/5 ratio and RB Springer who is gaining 5.5 YPR.  But, the Huskies have far more offensive balance, far more reason to play and huge line value in their favor, as they enter Husky Stadium today in this huge payback rivalry game.  I invite you to put the College Football ODDS in your favor and join me in my College Football PICK on Northern Illinois.
