College Football Betting: Bet Akron In Likely MAC Shootout Against Bowling Green

Bowling Green Falcons player

It's my second week in a row previewing an Akron Mid-American Conference Wednesday game as this week the Zips host struggling Bowling Green. The Zips are -8 on BookMaker college football odds.

Falcons Can't Stop Anyone

When a mid-major coach gets hired by a Power 5 program, everyone forgets about the small school once the coach has graduated to the big time -- unless of course you are a fan of backer of that mid-major. Bowling Green has been one of the MAC's better teams since 2012. But following a 10-win season in 2013, the school lost Dave Clawson to Wake Forest. Clawson was replaced by Dino Babers, and he led BGSU to a 10-win season last year and MAC Championship Game win over Northern Illinois.

Babers left for Syracuse before the Falcons' bowl game. He has been replaced by former Texas Tech running backs coach Mike Jinks, and things have not gone well. The Falcons are 1-8 overall and winless in the MAC. Their lone victory was by a point over FCS school North  Dakota in Week 2. And Bowling Green  might have lost that if UND had been successful on a late 2-point conversion. BGSU has never finished a season with less than two wins.

The Falcons lost at Northern Illinois 45-20 last week and have allowed at least 26 points in every game and a minimum of 40 in six of them.  Bowling Green ranks last nationally in points allowed per game (45.1) and near the bottom in yards (505.0 ypg).

One bright spot for Bowling Green this season has been the play of redshirt freshman quarterback James Morgan since taking over from benched senior James Knapke. Morgan was 21-for-41 for 224 yards and three touchdowns against Northern Illinois. He has 200 or more passing yards in each of his five starts and at least three scores in three straight games.

BGSU is 2-7 against the spread on college football odds (2-3 ATS on road).

Zips' Defense A Mess Again

Last Wednesday, Akron was an 8.5-point home underdog against Toledo, which is probably the second-best team in the MAC behind ranked Western Michigan. I recommended betting against Akron in that one and it worked out well as the Zips were rolled 48-17, their second straight loss by at least three touchdowns.

I wrote that I expected Toledo to put up at least 40 points on that terrible Zips defense. Akron played well for a quarter in leading 10-3, but then it was off to the races for the Rockets, who had 622 yards of offense and a whopping 33 first downs. Akron was solid offensively with 444 yards but turned it over twice. Thomas Woodson threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns. Jerome Lane had six catches for 177 yards and scored on a 91-yard catch-and run on Akron's first play from scrimmage. It was the second-longest scoring play in school history and Lane's fourth 100-yard game of the year. Senior Denzel Jones Jr. led the Zips with a career-high 72 yards rushing on a career-best 11 carries.

The loss dropped Akron to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference seriously harming its chances to win the MAC East Division. This will be Akron's home finale so the seniors will be honored. A victory gets Akron bowl eligible for the second straight season, which would be a school first.

Akron is 3-7 ATS on college football odds (1-4 ATS at home).

The Falcons have won seven straight over Akron, and it was a 59-10 blowout last year. But Akron is much improved this year and Bowling Green much worse. The Falcons are 2-8 ATS in their past 10 games.
