Week 4 of the College Football season is traditionally the first strong week of the season. This year is no exception, our expert handicapper provides a closer look and his very own college football pick.

Clemson (-10) at GA Tech 7:30 ET ESPN
In a battle of undefeated of 3-0 SU teams, the Clemson Tigers travel to Atlanta to meet the GA Tech Yellow Jackets. In last year’s downer of a season for GA Tech, they were soundly whipped by Clemson (43-24) as 7 point road dog on October 10th. Note the huge line swing in this contest year over year. It comes as a result of GA Tech dropping from their 2014 season of 11-3 SU, 10-3 ATS to their 2015 record of 3-9 SU, 2-9 ATS. While this was happening, the Clemson Tigers were reaching the pinnacle of success in a 14-1 SU season, whose only loss was in the National Title game to Alabama.

My college football pick in this contest is GA Tech. Though the two teams appear to have each turned around their seasons, it is hard to totally dismiss Clemson’s dominance at the point of attack last season, when they held the vaunted GA Tech triple-option to only 71 RY and outgained the Jackets 537-230. Let’s take a look at the changes that have occurred in the first 3 weeks of the season.

Once again, behind QB Watson (the leading Heisman candidate at the start of the season), the Tigers were expected to contend for national superiority.  But with wins (but no covers) of 19-13 at Auburn and 30-24 vs. Troy, Clemson failed to cover by 31 points, while averaging just 408 YPG.  Hardly the Tigers of last season!  Just not sure we can trust the 59-0 win last week vs. S. Carolina St. (as 51 point favorite) as pointing to a turnaround in the Tigers’ season. There is a good chance this season will prove to be an example of a team, who is fat from reading their press clippings over the winter and may prove to be one of the biggest underachievers this season. That could certainly hold true tonight, considering this has been the Tigers worst role of late at 5-9 ATS as road chalk L3+Y.

Far prefer the Ramblin’ Wreck, who is clearly in a bounce back season following the nadir of their discontent in 2015. They opened the season with a comeback win in Ireland against Boston College by a score of 17-14. After returning home, the Jackets got the kinks out against Mercer (35-10). But, it was last week’s (38-7) home field victory against a decent Vandy defense that has flashed the BUY sign for the Yellow Jackets this season. Not only did they get their ground game in gear, outrushing Vandy 289-85, but they balanced their attack with 222 PY. That’s a factor that must not be ignored.

The momentum of this 3-0 SU start for home underdog GA Tech and the motivation of playing against the best team in the League last year, with revenge for a dominating defeat, is all that is needed for this bounce back team to do no worse than take this game to the final whistle, if not win the contest outright.
