This week’s clash between Florida State and Clemson no longer holds the luster it once did, but that isn’t stopping us from offering a free college football pick for the contest.

Free College Football Pick: Under 46½Best Line Offered: at Heritage

Hop into my time machine for a short trip back about 90 days and into early-August. It was a time when every team had College Football Playoff hopes and a time we all thought the November 11 showdown between Florida State and Clemson would determine the ACC Atlantic Division crown. After all, the Seminoles tallied more 1st-place votes in the two conventional polls combined than the Tigers did at that time.

Welcome back to the present and the realization Saturday’s skirmish in Clemson doesn’t hold anywhere near that importance. True, the Tigers could clinch a spot in the ACC Championship with a win, but Florida State can’t even secure a bowl bid with an upset victory. And it would be an upset of large proportions with Clemson laying 16 at Bookmaker, a fairly substantial spread for a game with a relatively low 46 point total.

’Noles Still Without A Cover In 2017

So, where did things go awry for Jimbo Fisher and FSU? The season-opening loss to Alabama was tough enough, and compounded by losing star quarterback Deondre Francois for the year to a knee injury. Hurricane season also played a role, keeping the Seminoles off the field for 21 days after the setback to the Crimson Tide. And things really went swirling into the septic tank with back-to-back losses vs. Louisville and at Boston College, games Florida State was favored by about a touchdown on the NCAA football odds.

Following the upset defeat at Syracuse about a month ago, Clemson has bounced back with two wins that failed to cover spreads either time. Dabo Swinney’s squad topped Georgia Tech, 24-10, thanks to a strong defensive effort that pushed a closing 14 point line, then used special teams and one long gallop from scrimmage this past week to get past NC State, 38-31, as 10 point chalk. After beginning the campaign 4-1 against the spread, the Tigers have disappointed their backers three of the last four trips to the turf.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Despite losing the last two meetings, Florida State has still doubled-up Clemson over the history of this rivalry with a 20-10 record. The Seminoles covered the two recent defeats, leaving underdogs on a 3-game run against the spread entering Saturday. Three of the last four matchups at Memorial Stadium skipped past the totals.

Rain showers currently in the area are expected to push out by Saturday afternoon, leaving sunny skies and cool temps in the low-to-mid 50s. The Tigers simply have too much defense for the Seminoles, and that’s why my free college football pick is on the ‘under’ in a 26-10 final.
