Wildcats and Cowboys in Clash of BIG-12 Unbeatens
Two BIG-12 teams collide on Saturday when #20 Oklahoma State plays host to Kansas State. The opening kickoff at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma is slated for 4:00 PM ET, and it will be aired by Fox Sports1. According to current college football betting odds at BetOnline, Oklahoma State is a 7.0 point favorite. The Cowboys will be out to atone for a 48-14 thrashing they endured at Kansas State last year.

Reckoning Day
I’m not overly enamored with this Kansas State team despite their 3-0 record. They opened up with wins against cream puffs the likes of South Dakota (34-0) and Texas-San Antonio (30-3). They hosted Louisiana Tech in their third game and were given a huge scare as a 10.0 point home favorite. The Wildcats managed to escape with a 39-33 triple overtime win against their Conference USA opponent. The Wildcats defense which had been so good in their opening two wins, allowed Louisiana Tech to rack up 451 yards of total offense. I’m of the strong opinion, the Kansas State offense is nowhere near as good as their 34.3 point per game average indicates, and they’ll be exposed on Saturday.

Deep Sigh of Relief
Oklahoma State opened their BIG-12 schedule last Saturday in Austin against the desperate Texas Longhorns. They were able to squeeze out a 30-27 win. The Cowboys overcame a late 4th quarter 27-24 deficit thanks to a pair of Ben Grogan field goals in the final 1:45. The winning kick came on a 40 yard try with just 0:10 to play. The win improved their record to a perfect 4-0.

Offense sells Tickets and Defense wins Championships
The Oklahoma State offense has always been relatively productive if not explosive under head coach Mike Gundy. They appear to be once again this season based on their 38.7 points and 480.2 yards per game average. What’s held them from being a consistent upper echelon team over the last decade has been less than stellar defenses. However, this 2015 stop unit is looking to be a trend setter. The Cowboys defense is allowing an average of just 15.5 points and 299.7 yards per game. They were key contributor in last week’s win, shutting Texas out in the final quarter, and overcompensating for the Cowboys 3 turnovers.

Final Analysis
The loss of starting quarterback Jesse Ertz to a knee injury on the second offensive play of the season against South Dakota was a massive blow to Kansas State. He was replaced by Joe Hubener who’s been adequate at best. I like the home team to win this game by a decisive margin, and revenge last season’s humiliating loss in Manhattan, Kansas. One of my college football picks this week will reflect that prediction.
