SBR contributor Ross Benjamin breaks down the 2016 Hawaii Bowl matchup between Middle Tennessee and Hawaii. Ross has gone 48-24 (66.7%) ATS this season with his college football selections. The pick here is ...

Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Vs. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

Hawaii (6-7) will be making its 7th appearance in the Hawaii Bowl and its first since 2010. That also marked the last time Hawaii appeared in a bowl game. The game will take place on Saturday at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, where the Rainbow Warriors have gone 3-3 this season. Technically, MT is the home team here. Kickoff is 8 p.m. ET and the game will be televised by ESPN.

Hawaii’s opponent will be the Blue Raiders (8-4) from Conference USA. Middle Tennessee will be making its 5th bowl appearance in 8 years, and all under current head coach Rick Stockstill.

At the time of this writing, college football odds at BetOnline have Middle Tennessee as a 5.0-point favorite and there’s a posted total of 70.0.

Home & Losing Teams in Bowl Games

Since 1996, bowl teams playing on their home field have gone 19-11 (.633) straight up and 18-12 ATS (60%). If those home teams were facing an opponent with a win percentage of .600 or better, they improved to 12-6 SU & ATS.

You may be surprised to know that since 2011, teams playing in a bowl game with a losing record as Hawaii is have gone 7-3 SU & ATS. As a matter of fact, 5 teams with losing records played in a bowl game last year, and they went 5-0 ATS in addition to winning straight up in 4.

Late Line Posting

There was no spread or total released on this contest until Thursday due to the questionable availability of Middle Tennessee starting quarterback Brent Stockstill (head coach’s son). The sophomore sustained a broken collarbone against Texas-San Antonio on Nov. 5 and was originally ruled out for the season. However, the left-handed thrower has been practicing this week and by all accounts will give it a go on Christmas Eve. Stockstill has passed for 2,801 yards and 27 touchdowns compared to just 5 interceptions while completing 64% of his attempts in 9 starts.

Final Analysis

Middle Tennessee is averaging 40.1 points scored and gained 514.7 yards per game during regular-season action. However, the Blue Raiders have allowed 42 points or more in 6 of their 12 games. Additionally, Hawaii has allowed 40 points or more in 7 of its 13 games. This has all the ear marks of a high scoring affair, and one of my college football bowl predictions will follow suit.
