The opening kickoff at the Crampton Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama is slated for 5:30 PM ET. Current (12/11) college football odds lists Appalachian State as an 8 point favorite.

The Mountaineers
Appalachian State will be playing its first bowl game since moving to the FBS level in 2013. The Mountaineers were a perennial power at the FCS level, and won three consecutive national championships from 2005 to 2007. After suffering a 41-10 setback at #1 Clemson in week two, they went 9-1 during their final ten regular season games. Unfortunately, their only loss in that sequence came to Arkansas State, and prevented them from winning the Sun Belt Conference crown. The Mountaineers are a well rounded team that ranks #26 in total offense and #13 in total defense.

Strong Finish for Bobcats
Considering the amount of injuries that Ohio sustained this season, an 8-4 record deems to be very commendable, and it may have been the best head coaching job of Frank Solich’s stellar career. They lost their two top quarterbacks down the final stretch, yet managed to finish the regular season on a three game winning streak. However, two of those wins came against the likes of Kent State and Ball State who went a combined 6-18 in 2015. Keep in mind that Ohio went through a three game losing streak this year against Western Michigan, Buffalo, and Bowling Green University, and were outscored by a cumulative margin of 152-55.

Final Thought and Early Pick
Appalachian State fans travel very well, and that goes all the way back to their days at the FCS level. Being that this is their first ever bowl appearance, I expect the Mountaineer faithful to turn out in large numbers. That’s certainly a factor that can’t be ignored, and I’ll go out on a limb to say Bobcats supporters will be vastly outnumbered in Montgomery. In my humble opinion, Appalachian State has the edge on both sides of the ball in this matchup. I’m going with the favorite for one of my college football picks.
