The joy of last season for Florida Atlantic was quickly washed away as the Owls were thrashed by Oklahoma 63-14 last week as 18.5-point road underdogs. And it was not even that close.

Doug's 2018 CFB Record: 1-1

Air Force (1-0 SU and ATS) at Florida Atlantic (0-1 SU and ATS)

Saturday, 2 p.m. ET

Free NCAAF Pick: Air Force +10

Best Line Offered: Bovada

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3448802, "sportsbooksIds":[999996,1602,999991,139,1252], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]

For Air Force and Florida Atlantic, the results of their season-starting games had to do with who they faced. The Falcons flew by Stony Brook 38-0 as 15-point home favorites, holding them to 75 yards of offense on 50 plays. FAU was no match for the speed and power of Oklahoma, trailing 56-0 before the Sooners went deep into the depth chart.

According to the college football odds, there is still ample faith in Florida Atlantic, as they were pushed from -7.5 to -10 early in the week against Air Force. Defense, more than offense, will determine this nonconference clash.

FAU head coach Lane Kiffin was counting on his 10 returning defensive starters making improvement from one year to the next. Probably facing Oklahoma is not a fair way to judge the Owls defense, which was slow afoot against the Sooners. This week, FAU defenders will face Air Force's potent option offense. Owls defensive players will have to be disciplined, read their keys and stay in lanes to slow the Falcons. If they can create penetration and take away the option dive with the fullback, that will help their cause.

Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun knew he had to repair the worst run defense in the country last year. Inexperience was a massive issue. This season, with all but one defender upperclassmen, the Air Force defense should be better in 2018. Playing in the Mountain West, they do see more speed than what you would typically find in C-USA. But having to deal with RB Devin Singletary and the Owls' deceptive offense could be a problem.

[/]{"component":"video", "type":"youtube", "url":"https://www.youtube.com/embed/AuCjH0cY24k", "videoSize":"Large" }[/]

The Flyboys' big concern is stopping the run, but if they leave their cornerbacks on an island, FAU has the speed at receiver to blow by the Air Force secondary.

For your college football picks, it's easy to look at Kiffin's squad and like them in a bounce-back effort, when also consider they were 7-1 and 6-2 ATS at FAU Stadium last year. Nevertheless, it's hard to imagine Air Force will be intimidated, having played at places such as Michigan, Michigan State and Boise State in recent years.

If the number stays at 10, know this, the Flyboys are 7-2 ATS the last few years when catching points on the road. Florida Atlantic may well win the game, just by single digits.

Around Conference USA (All Games Saturday Unless Noted)

Appalachian State at Charlotte (+13.5), 6 p.m. ET, on ESPN+: Appalachian State almost delivered the knockout punch to Penn State before falling in OT.
