The BYU Cougars and Michigan Wolverines watched their seasons go in different directions this past weekend. BYU was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten as it lost to UCLA. The Cougars were right there with a chance to win in the final minutes, but couldn’t come through. More on that below. Michigan rolled to an easy win over UNLV and is slowly beginning to make some forward strides.

The Cougars are playing every game down to the wire this year. BYU won on the last play against Nebraska, and then in the final minute against Boise State. Against UCLA, the Cougars were near the Bruins’ 40-yard line, needing about 10 more yards to get into field goal range in the final two minutes of regulation time, trailing by one point at 24-23. Tanner Mangum, the backup quarterback who completed Hail Mary touchdown passes in each of the past two weeks, just needed to get his team into decent field goal range to move BYU to 3-0, but he couldn’t do it. He was intercepted, and the Cougars fell one point short of keeping their unbeaten season alive. The Cougars improbably won, and then they lost a heartbreaker. They know they’re playing things close, so they have to try to get more of an edge this time, heading into the final minutes.

Michigan is still learning how to play offense, but for the second straight week, the Wolverines gave up only seven points. Their defense is right there and on point. Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin are doing a great job with that half of the team. If the offense can just make modest improvements each week, Michigan could have a very good team by season’s end, and the Wolverines could be more of a contender than many analysts first thought when this season began.

Line Moves
The College Football Odds started at minus-4.5 points for Michigan, but has since moved to 5.5 points. People are more and more sold on Michigan as they see the Wolverines’ defense play so well. BYU’s habit of playing everyone close is creating the perception of weakness, too.

Notable Injuries
The Cougars, it is known, are without their number one quarterback, Taysom Hill, for the rest of the season. Tanner Mangum has replaced him.

From previous weeks, running back Jamaal Williams, tight end Steven Richards, and tight end Colby Jorgensen have been known as players who will not play with the team again this season for various reasons.

Here are the new injuries for the Cougars: Defensive back Garrett Juergens is out indefinitely with a collarbone injury. Running back Algernon Brown is questionable for this game with a knee injury.

The Wolverines have defensive tackle Bryan Mone out indefinitely with a leg injury. Offensive lineman Logan Tuley has been dismissed from the team. Fullback Joe Kerridge is questionable for this game with an ankle injury. Linebacker Mike McCray is questionable for undisclosed reasons. So are tight end Tyrone Wheatley, running back Wyatt Shallman, wide receiver Brian Cole, and defensive back Dymonte Thomas.

Handicapping The Game
The Wolverines are gaining momentum, while BYU just doesn’t seem that powerful, and the Cougars were lucky to win their two games on Hail Mary plays. Add it all up, and Michigan should win here. Take them with your College Football Picks.
