Big 12 College Football Picks: K-State Wildcats Won't be Tamed by Kansas

Rivalry week wouldn't be complete without mentioning the Kansas State Wildcats and Kansas Jayhawks. Join us for a preview and free college football pick.

It hasn't been a very good year for football in the Sunflower State, and that's putting it nicely. Still, it hasn't been as bad as the 1988 season when the Kansas State Wildcats and Kansas Jayhawks combined for just one win between them, and there's more than just pride on the line this time for one of the teams.

The old foes revive their acquaintances this Saturday afternoon (4 PM ET)  I wouldn't expect a sold out crowd after only a few thousand Jayhawks fans showed up a week ago to witness an ass-whipping at the hands of West Virginia. If there is a huge crowd at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, it will be a partisan K-State group.

A quick glance at SBR's college football odds finds KSU -20 across the board, the spread opening 1½ points higher. The total originated at 56.

That '88 season we spoke of earlier ended with Kansas' only win coming against an 0-11 Kansas State team. The Jayhawks have built a 65-42-5 advantage in the series, but it's been all KSU lately, the Wildcats winning the last six and 19 of the last 23. Four of the last five have hopped 'over' the totals, including last year's 51-13 K-State win in Manhattan, the Wildcats almost making it to the 51½ point total by themselves. It was not only their 6th-straight victory, but also the sixth consecutive time KSU backers went back to the pay window.

K-State Needs 2 Wins To Get Bowl Invite
Bill Snyder and his staff shouldn't have any problem getting their Kansas State (4-6 straight up, 4-5-1 against the spread) crew up to play this rivalry; the problem might be keeping the Wildcats from thinking they're just going to walk into Lawrence and leave with an easy victory considering the shape of KU's team.

Mind you, Snyder & Company wouldn't mind an easy go of it this week so they could give some starters a little extra rest in advance of next week's season finale at home against West Virginia. Kansas State needs to win its final two games to become bowl eligible for a sixth consecutive season.

The Wildcats just pulled out of a 6-game nose dive, their worst skid in more than a quarter century, with a 38-35 decision over Iowa State last Saturday. Favored by 3 at the closing bell, K-State trailed by 21 at the half, and needed 10 points in the final 45 seconds to complete the rally for the dubya.

Except for the first two games against South Dakota and UT-San Antonio, defense has been an issue all year for the Wildcats. They're 96th in the country allowing 32.7 PPG, and 108th in the land in yards allowed (454.7 ypg).

Will Kansas Even Show Up For This One?
David Beaty would love to win his first game as a collegiate head coach, and Kansas (0-11 SU, 2-8-1 ATS) would dearly love to avoid their first winless campaign in over 60 years. The Jayhawks have come close to do it four times since going 0-10 in 1954, most recently in 1988 when they beat the 'Cats for their only victory.

The same West Virginia team K-State will host next week just handed KU its 14th-straight loss with a dominating effort. The Mountaineers, who were favored by 30, rolled up 630 yards of offense while holding the Jayhawks to just over 200 in the 49-0 decision that saw WVU up by four TDs in the first quarter. West Virginia ran for more than 400 yards, and run defense has been an issue all season for Kansas who ranks ahead of only Idaho and Eastern Michigan in yards allowed on the ground.

The weather will definitely keep a huge crowd from showing up, the forecast calling for a chance of freezing drizzle in the early morning before only warming to around 40º with a 10-15 mph NE breeze in the afternoon. It's difficult to count on the Jayhawks even showing up for this one, which is why my free college football pick is to lay the points on the 'Cats.
