The college football season moves into its sixth weekend, and with various shifts in the balance of power across the nation, it’s always a fresh challenge to size up two teams at one point in time.

Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. West Virginia Mountaineers
West Virginia -7
This is a game in which the two teams involved are both dealing with a major loss on defense: The Cowboys are without linebacker Ryan Simmons. The Mountaineers are without safety Karl Joseph, the hardest-hitting member of their starting secondary. Both losses will hurt each team’s defense, so it’s probably a wash or something close to it. Neither team played well last week, even though Oklahoma State won its game. The Cowboys were going up against a Kansas State team that was playing third, fourth and fifth-string quarterbacks. They were also hosting Kansas State.

West Virginia, on the other hand, went on the road to play a relatively healthy Oklahoma team. If both teams played in the other’s situation last week (Oklahoma State at Oklahoma, West Virginia hosting Kansas State), the results very likely would have been the same. What emerges as a difference is that West Virginia, after losing, is going to feel more of a sense of urgency to win, while Oklahoma State will feel a little more complacent after winning yet another Big 12 squeaker. This could be a very close game, but West Virginia might gain momentum and get on a roll at home. Take the Mountaineers with your college football picks, trusting them to cover the number.

Wyoming Cowboys vs. Air Force Falcons
Air Force -24
The key point to make here is that Wyoming is quite possibly one of the five worst teams in college football. The Cowboys have lost to teams that have been at or near the very bottom of the sport for many years: New Mexico and Eastern Michigan, plus North Dakota of the lower-division Football Championship Subdivision. Wyoming really could not have performed worse to this point in the season. The Cowboys lose by 10 to 20 points against bad teams. Air Force is probably better than a bad team. The Falcons lost by 22 points last weekend, but the team they lost to, Navy, is unbeaten and playing as well as it has in some time. Air Force should be able to bounce back with a good performance. If a Wyoming opponent plays well, that opponent should win by a big margin and cover the college football odds. Take the Falcons at home.

East Carolina Pirates vs. Brigham Young Cougars
Brigham Young -8
It’s true that BYU has a loud crowd and that East Carolina is with a backup quarterback combo, Blake Kemp and running quarterback James Summers. However, BYU struggled with Connecticut at home last week. The Cougars are not very consistent right now. East Carolina played very well in a win over Virginia Tech. The Pirates might not win, but they will cover the number.

College Football Pick: East Carolina +9.5 at BetOnline
