Steve Spurrier wasn’t happy with his play calling last week, which means that sports bettors should anticipate a low-scoring affair between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Kentucky Wildcats.

Level of Difficulty
South Carolina has dropped two of its first five games of the 2014 campaign due to facing the nation’s fifth-toughest schedule to date, as it attempts to bounce back from a 21-20 home loss to the Missouri Tigers in Week 5.

The Gamecocks own a 17-7-1 SU record in this all-time series, which validates them as road favorites in the college football odds, especially since current head coach Steve Spurrier has won 20 of his 21 career meetings against Kentucky.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the squad is 5-3 SU and 2-6 ATS as favorites of 3.5 to 10 points, with the UNDER going 5-3 in that situation.

Building a Program
Mark Stoops has revitalized Kentucky’s program in just his second year in Lexington, as the school earned its first Southeastern Conference win since 2011 in outlasting the Vanderbilt Commodores last Saturday.

The Wildcats allowed the Commodores to gain just 139 yards of total offense—the fewest they’ve allowed against a conference opponent in more than 18 years.

College football handicappers will find that the team ranks 13th nationally in scoring defense and 25th in total defense in producing a 3-1 SU record through four games.

Ground and Pound
Spurrier wants to keep Kentucky’s new high-tempo offense off the field at Commonwealth Stadium in this matchup, which means that South Carolina will feature junior running back Mike Davis when possessing the football.

Davis ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns in last year’s 35-28 home win over the Wildcats, while it’s important to point out that starting quarterback Dylan Thompson (neck) and leading receiver Pharoh Cooper (multiple) have both been slowed down by injuries in practice this week.

Inflated Number
The Wildcats are averaging 31.5 points and 473.0 yards per game, which are impressive numbers to consider when making your Week 6 NCAA football picks, but the Gamecocks are coming off their best defensive performance of the season.

Sports bettors will also find that the betting total has risen from 52.5 to as high as 56.5 due to a majority of the action coming in on the OVER—a bit surprising due to this being the highest number in this series since 2007.

I’m going to recommend that readers play the total as one of their top college football picks of the weekend, as the UNDER is 8-4 in the Gamecocks’ last 12 games versus teams with a winning record.

South Carolina will control the pace of play in this contest, especially with Spurrier focused on avoiding a third loss in conference play.
