Bet the 'Over' for Rice vs. Texas A&M College Football

Texas A&M is off and running in 2014, the Aggies soaring up the rankings and even getting a couple of No. 1 votes. But can they cover the college football odds vs. Rice?

And so it was that I was conceived a Texas Aggie during the early days of General Eisenhower's occupancy of the residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington DC, 20500.  Years later, while working phone banks at the reelection headquarters for Richard Nixon in Houston, I happened to become smitten with a Rice co-ed also working there.

I shoulda' known it would never work, and she's part of the reason I've had a long grudge against the Owls as Texas A&M prepares for a visit from their former Southwest Conference foe.

Kickoff at morphing Kyle Field is 9 PM (ET), the late boot on ESPN2. I drew three of the last four games on Saturday's college football betting schedule, plus will be releasing three other prime-time matchups that evening to chase a losing afternoon.

I already leaked my initial thoughts on this one in this week's inflated odds report.  Right now, SBR's live College football odds have Texas A&M -31.5 with a 71 point total.

Long Dark Hair Parted In The Middle, With Nice Ta-Ta's
Not that I ever saw them, mind you, but under those conservative blouses and dresses, they sure looked nice.  Love unrequited, it was, and I'm still sure to this day it was her loss.

My miss with the pretty Rice miss is not my only experience with the rivalry between Rice and Texas A&M.  I've attended many of the 81 games between the Owls and Aggies, Rice giving TAMU fits on the field and in the stands quite often.  Texas A&M has a 51-27-4 advantage in the series that began with a 32-7 Texas A&M triumph two months short of 100 years ago.  But there have been some close calls in many of the affairs, with Rice covering the last three clashes.

There hasn't been anything close about A&M's first two games this season, a 52-28 upset win at South Carolina as a 9.5 point road 'dog to begin the campaign and last week's 73-3 laugher at home vs. Lamar giving up 46.5 points.  The Aggies have had no trouble finding replacements for Johnny Manziel and receiver Mike Evans, both plying their trades in the NFL these days, as Kenny Hill has taken to the QB job like a duck to water and Malcome Kennedy leads a deep group of wideouts to give him plenty of targets downfield.

The defense does look improved from a year ago when the Ags ranked 111th in the nation allowing over 475 yards per game, but they have still shown some vulnerability to the pass.  Six sacks through two games is more than a quarter of what A&M tallied all of 2013, and the Aggies will need to keep the pressure up against Rice.

Owls Have Week Off To Prepare For Short Road Trip
Rice has had a couple of weeks to prepare for the Aggies after beginning 2014 with a 48-17 loss at then-No. 17 Notre Dame.  Considering that's 17 more points than Michigan managed against the Irish last week, it's a least a moral victory for head coach David Bailiff and the Owls.

If you'll recall, A&M didn't have Manziel for the first half of last year's meeting, the quarterback serving a suspension during the first 30 minutes while the Aggies took just a 7-point lead into the locker room.  Manziel did play some in the second half before his cockiness got the best of him, and Rice ended up with more total offense than the Aggies who couldn't cover a 28-point spread in the eventual 52-31 A&M victory.

There is a very good chance the Tifway Bermuda grass at Kyle Field is going to get wet Friday night and into Saturday.  The weatherman is presently calling for an 80% chance of rain overnight and through the early afternoon hours, but it's supposed to tail off by game time.  As always, check the latest forecast before going to the college football wagering window.

I can still see Rice staying inside this spread against A&M, but am in love with the total.  My free college football pick is on the final finishing above the present scoreboard mark.
