The Auburn Tigers are about to begin a brutal stretch on the SEC schedule, but first they get an NCAA football odds mismatch at home against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

Having just beaten a top 20 team on the road, the Auburn Tigers catch a little break this week with a home date against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.  Let's hope Gus Malzahn and his squad enjoy the game, because it sure isn't going to get any easier the next seven weeks when Auburn has six conference games scheduled against six more top-20 teams.

Current college football odds say the Tigers should roll to an easy win in the 4 PM (ET) matchup at Jordan-Hare Stadium.  The SEC Network will broadcast the mismatch that has Auburn laying 32 points vs. Louisiana Tech, down one from the opener.

Saturday's scoreboard hurdle has seen a slight increase from the start to 61.5 points.

It's the lucky 13th meeting between the two schools, though the series has provided anything but good fortunes for the Bulldogs who remain winless in the 12 previous matchups.  The rivalry dates to about two months prior to the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor, according to historian John Blutarsky, and the closest La Tech has come to a win was battling War Eagle to a 13-all tie in 1948.

Auburn has covered the last two clashes, the most recent in 2009 when the Tigers posted a 37-13 triumph as 12 point favorites.  But they've never covered a spread this high, the closest to this number coming in 2000 when the Tigers were giving up 32 and managed only a 38-28 victory.

'Dogs Sloppy In Upset Loss Vs. Northwestern State
Thanks to the popularity of Duck Dynasty and the show's patriarch, Phil Robertson, Louisiana Tech football has been in the news in recent years.  Skip Holtz, now in his second season as head coach in Ruston, would like to push the Bulldogs into the spotlight for something other than the school where Robertson and Terry Bradshaw once played, but they'll have to perform better than a week ago against Northwestern State.  Much better.

Favored by 23 and up by 10 with 8½ minutes left on the clock, La Tech fell apart and allowed the Demons to score the game's final 13 points for a 30-27 upset.  The Bulldogs turned it over five times against FCS NW State, the last two setting up the game-tying and game-winning field goals for the Demons.

This isn't Louisiana Tech's first road game against a top 5 opponent, having already ventured into Norman to take on the Oklahoma Sooners in the season opener.  The Bulldogs just managed to stay inside the 33 point spread in the 48-16 setback, but needed to score a late touchdown against Sooner reserves to provide the payday.

Malzahn Looks For Better Showing From Offense
Auburn began defense of its SEC crown with a 45-21 victory over Arkansas, blanking the Razorbacks 24-0 in the second half and running for more than 300 yards to cover the 17.5 point spread.  Nick Marshall and the Tigers offense didn't find the going as easy last week at Kansas State, however, but still managed to escape Manhattan with a 20-14 victory that fell just short of the spread.

Marshall plus backfield mates Cameron Artis-Payne and Corey Grant shouldn't have too much trouble reestablishing the ground game this Saturday against the Buldogs.  What's more, when Marshall does elect to pass, there's a good chance he'll have Sammie Coates among his targets.  Coates, who led the Tigers last season with 42 receptions and seven touchdown catches, is listed as probable after being slowed to start 2014 by a left knee injury.

Clouds are expected Saturday afternoon at Jordan-Hare in advance of what the weatherman is listing as an 80% chance of rain in Auburn on Sunday.  Make sure to check the latest forecast before making your wager.

I'm a little worried about how long Malzahn will play his starters with LSU on deck to begin as tough a schedule stretch as any team will play this season.  But the Tigers still get my free college football pick nod.
