The three games on this card are all important for each team and for those who place college football picks, but one of them has national championship and College Football Playoff implications.

Tennessee Volunteers vs. Florida Gators
This is a game in which the two teams involved don’t yet seem ready to win the SEC East Division. However, they both have a chance to do so, and the loser of this game would probably kiss its chances goodbye, so it’s a vital one for both sides. The issue for Tennessee is consistency. The Vols were great in the first half against Oklahoma a few weeks ago, but they became a completely different and worse team in the second half. They lost control of momentum, they lost control of their confidence, and they lost control of the line of scrimmage. Falling apart after dominating early is the sign of a young team that is learning how to compete for all 60 minutes. It’s going to be a challenge for Tennessee this weekend.

However, the Vols are going up against a team which seems to be even earlier in the rebuilding process. Florida has the remnants of what was a terrible offensive unit under former head coach Will Muschamp. Current first-year coach Jim McElwain has a tough task on his hands, and even though his team won last weekend in a conference game at Kentucky, scoring just 14 points shows that he has a long way to go. Tennessee has more offensive weapons than Florida does, including the quarterback position. Florida needs Tennessee to make tons of offensive mistakes in order to win the game. That’s very possible, but the Vols will probably contain their mistakes enough to hold on in Gainesville.

California Golden Bears vs. Washington Huskies
The California Golden Bears did give up 44 points last week, but they scored 45, so while there are certainly weaknesses on this team, the offense is a huge strength. Quarterback Jared Goff has impressed coaches and analysts with his ability to quickly go through his progressions, scan the whole field, survey his three or four main options, and get the ball to the right receiver in the right spot at the right time. Washington has not faced a quarterback who is nearly as good as Goff, and that should help the Golden Bears to outscore a much less potent Washington offense on the road in Seattle. Take Cal with your college football picks.

TCU Horned Frogs vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders
It’s undeniable that TCU is being ravaged and gutted on defense. The Horned Frogs, through a series of injuries and suspensions, have only one active player left who started for last year’s defense. The Horned Frogs gave up 37 points to SMU last week. They certainly seem ripe for the plucking on defense. Their offense might win the game, but their defense is going to keep this game very close. Texas Tech should cover the college football odds.
