On December 29th ESPN will televise the Belk Bowl featuring the Arkansas Razorbacks taking on the Virginia Tech Hokies. Let’s review the college football odds and get on the sharp side in this one.

Arkansas vs. Virginia Tech

Arkansas wrapped their regular season with a whimper as they fell 28-24 to lightly regarded Missouri. The Razorbacks were installed by the college football odds makers as 7 ½ point road chalk but failed to live up to their billing. Missouri appeared as though they were mailing it in, trailing 24-7 at the end of the first half. But a strong defensive performance in the second half, holding the Hogs scoreless, coupled with three touchdowns turned the agony of defeat into the thrill of victory. Arkansas closed out their regular season campaign with a 7-5 straight up mark but went just 5-7 against the spread.

After a hotly contested road win over the Fighting Irish followed by a blowout of Virginia, the Hokies (9-4 SU, 7-6 ATS) concluded their season against No. 2 ranked Clemson. Installed as 11-point neutral site underdogs in the ACC Championship game, the Hokies battled admirably but had no answer for the Tigers’ Heisman candidate quarterback Deshaun Watson. Watson tossed three touchdowns and ran for a pair in Clemson’s 42-35 championship thriller. Despite the loss all those who backed the gritty Hokies in their college football picks cashed, as the 11-points proved more than enough to get the ATS cover.

Both teams have been extremely profitable against the spread in their games following a loss. Arkansas is 6-1 ATS in their last seven after a loss while Virginia Tech is 4-1 ATS in their last five following a loss. Virginia Tech is getting quite a bit of public action simply because they are the more glamorous of the two schools, ranked 22nd in the nation and 24th in points scored, averaging 34.8 PPG. Arkansas, on the other hand, has to battle in one of the best conferences in college football, the vaunted SEC, and checks in at 30.8 PPG (54th). Defensively, V-Tech gets the nod again, ranked 30th and allowing just 22.7 PPG while the Razorbacks are surrendering 30.8 PPG and ranked 84th.

I believe the public is on the right side of things here. The Hokies have a dynamic quarterback in Jerod Evans, who passed for 27 touchdowns and rushed for 10, and the Hogs simply don’t have an answer for that kind of multidimensional threat. Defensively the Hokies should be up to the task containing a Razorbacks team that melted in the second half of their last game against Missouri. The Hokies pose a much greater threat than the Tigers and should run away with this one.
