Hoping to find a back door into the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff, Auburn is a slight underdog on the NCAA football odds at home against Georgia on Saturday.

The road to the SEC Championship might theoretically go through, but in terms of actual geography this year, it runs through Auburn where the Tigers may have the final say in just how both the conference championship and College Football Playoff play out. No. 10 Auburn hosts the current top 2 teams in the nation over the next three Saturdays, first up on that short list being the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs.

The old foes renew their rivalry for the 111th time this week, CBS carrying the 3:30 PM (ET) kickoff at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Bulldogs are 2½-point favorites at most outlets with signs the spread could bump up to an even field goal by game time. BetOnline sent out a 51½-point total, that number having now settled on 47.

Dawgs’ Ground Game Ranks 8th In Nation

Kirby Smart has made quick work establishing the Bulldogs as the beasts of the East Division in the SEC. Following up on a 4-4 league mark a year ago when his first season on the job culminated with a Liberty Bowl win over TCU, Smart has Georgia already in the conference title game with an average score of around 39-10 in the half-dozen SEC affairs. Freshman QB Jake Fromme has done an outstanding job directing an offense that features the senior tailback tandem of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.

A blocked punt at the end of the first half last week at Texas A&M capped a 21-point second quarter for Auburn, propelling the Tigers to a 42-27 win that pushed a 15-point spread. Sophomore Jarrett Stidham was an efficient 20-for-27 throwing the ball, three of his completions going for touchdowns, and Kerryon Johnson ran for 145 yards in yet another balanced offensive showing for Auburn. The Tigers are a bit banged up on the O-line with center Casey Dunn (knee) and left guard Mike Horton (ankle) both questionable.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Georgia has assumed the lead in the series, 57-55-8, by winning the last three. The Bulldogs covered the NCAA football odds in each dubya, once as home favorites, once as home underdogs and their last trip to Auburn which closed as a pick ‘em. All three games stayed ‘under’ totals which ranged from 51 to 71.

It should be a pretty nice afternoon for football down on the plains, where the forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and the thermometer barely crossing the 60° barrier. With two stout defenses and solid running attacks, establishing the pass early is the key. I believe Stidham and the Tigers are going to do that and pull off the outright upset for my free college football pick.
