The Irish and Wolfpack in South Bend
Notre Dame (0-1) will take on Nevada (1-0) in its home opener on Saturday. The opening kickoff at Notre Dame Stadium is slated for 3:30 PM ET, and the game will be televised nationally on NBC.

This will be the first meeting on the gridiron between these schools since 9/5/2009. Notre Dame was a 35-0 winner at home on that day. You may be familiar with who Nevada’s quarterback was in that game. He was a junior by the name of Colin Kaepernick (49ers).

Current college football betting odds at BetOnline displays Notre Dame as a 28.0-point favorite, and the posted total is 60.5. Presently, BetOnline is offering some very attractive bonuses, and the sportsbook rating guide I rely on indicates they’re a solid company to wager with.

Last Week
Nevada received a huge scare last Saturday during their season opener. They barely escaped with a 30-27 overtime win over Cal Poly as a large 22.5-point favorite. Nevada squandered a 24-10 lead entering the 4th quarter, and needed a touchdown in overtime to overcome a 27-24 deficit, thus surviving against their FCS opponent.

It must be noted, Nevada’s defense allowed an alarmingly high 383 yards rushing against Cal Poly’s triple option attack. Cal Poly also amassed 82 more total yards than Nevada and held a substantial 36:09 to 23:51 time of possession advantage.

Notre Dame sustained a heartbreaking 50-47 overtime loss at Texas last Sunday. They were able to overcome a 31-14 second half hole by scoring 21 unanswered points, and temporarily took a 35-31 lead. Nevertheless, Texas showed no quit and was able to gut out a win as a 3.5-point home underdog.

On a positive note for Notre Dame, sophomore quarterback Deshone Kizer was brilliant in defeat. Kizer threw for 215 yards while tossing 5 touchdown passes. He also rushed for 77 yards and an additional score. The antithesis of Kizer’s superb performance belonged to Notre Dame’s defense. They allowed Texas to rack up 517 yards of total offense. They were equally inept at stopping the run as it was defending Texas’ aerial attack. ‘The Irish' secondary was beaten several times on deep pass patterns. With that in mind, Nevada doesn’t possess the speed at wide receiver that Texas presently possesses.

Final Take and Pick
This may sound like a bit of an oxymoron, but I’m going to state it anyway. The worse thing that happened for Nevada in terms of its chances to cover this game, pertains to Notre Dame losing last week. The Fighting Irish will be in a sour mood, and will look to rebound in emphatic fashion. I’m never crazy about laying this large of a number, so the lean is a small one on the home chalk for one of my Saturday college football expert picks.
