The Virginia Cavaliers had been 4-2 on the season and were in the process of clearly saving head coach Mike London’s job. The program appeared to be headed in the right direction, with progress being evident to everyone who followed the team on Saturdays. However, the Cavaliers have taken the wrong turn over the past month, going 0-4 and failing to eclipse 20 points in three of those games. Now they’re a six-point home dog on the college football betting lines on Saturday.
The Miami Hurricanes Can Win Because…
They are playing a team that has lost its way; Virginia hasn’t just lost four straight games, they've also looked bad doing so. Virginia has committed the worst kinds of mistakes to lose its games. It’s not as though Virginia has simply been outplayed, or that other teams have managed to make great plays. The Cavaliers had 12 men on the field on defense on a fourth and two play in the final minutes of a 28-27 game against North Carolina. The penalty occurred out of a timeout, which is absolutely mind-blowing. That penalty gave North Carolina a first down and a chance to run out the remainder of the clock. Virginia receivers dropped passes in a road loss at Duke, the team’s defense could not do much of anything in the first quarter and a half against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. They played fairly well against Florida State, but the level of the Cavaliers’ performance only served to show how poorly and ineffectively this team competed against Duke, North Carolina, and Georgia Tech. When a team falls so far short of its potential, it’s hard to show faith in that team at the betting window.
The college football odds are not kind to Virginia in a few key areas. The Cavaliers are 86th in scoring offense this season, and they’re 92nd in rushing offense. Can Virginia score enough points to feel comfortable when going up against Miami’s skill-position speed and talent? That’s going to be tough.
The Virginia Cavaliers Can Win Because…
They are playing a team that just played the most meaningful and anticipated game of the season… and fell short. The Miami Hurricanes put everything they had into last week’s home game against the Florida State Seminoles. Like a number of other teams that have played Florida State this season, Miami gained a lead of 15 points or greater, but then couldn’t hold on in the second half and lost. Miami could very easily be discouraged as it comes into this game. The Hurricanes could still be thinking about the very big opportunity that got away against an archrival in the kind of event that feels like the center of the whole season. If Miami plays as though it has nothing left to play for – which would certainly be an understandable, though not optimal, response by the Hurricanes – Virginia could step in and steal this game. This is a classic letdown game for Miami, a team that might not play with a lot of happiness or enthusiasm so soon after a crushing defeat. You’ve seen this before, and you could see it again.
Here's another capper's take on Miami vs Virginia
If Miami’s offense can be consistent, the Hurricanes should win, as they've completed only four passes for 45 yards in the second half against Florida State. The Hurricanes should be a lot better in this game against Virginia, so take them with your college football picks.
