We’re going to examine Saturday’s contest between Maryland and Michigan State. Will the Spartans rebound from their first loss of the season last week? Will Maryland be able to add to their run of four consecutive covers in a row? Go inside in order to find out.

Terrapins a Big Dog Against Spartans
Michigan State and Maryland collide on Saturday in a Big Ten contest. The opening kickoff at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan is slated for Noon ET. Current (11/13) college football odds at The Greek list Michigan State as a 15.5-point favorite. This game will be televised nationally by ESPN2. These teams met a season ago in College Park, Maryland with Michigan State coming away with a 37-15 win, and easily covering as a 10.5 point favorite.

No Quit Despite the Losing Season
Maryland enters this week with a dismal 2-7 record, and losers of six games in a row. Their head coach Randy Edsall was relieved of his duties following their 49-28 loss at Ohio State, and he was replaced on an interim basis by offensive coordinator Mike Locksley. Maryland has gone 0-3 since Locksley took over. Locksley was the former head coach at New Mexico between 2009 and 2011 where his teams were 2-26 during his tenure. He was relieved of his duties after an 0-4 start in 2011. It’s safe to say with a career 2-29 head coaching record, Locksley won’t have the interim tag lifted anytime soon. However, in the three games under Locksley, the Terrapins have covered in each of those contests. To the players credit, they haven’t quit despite the uncertainty of their next coaching staff, and the frustrating season in which they’ve endured. They’re coming off a narrow 31-24 home loss to Wisconsin last Saturday, and covered as a 9.5 point underdog.

Squashed National Title Hopes
Michigan State received a dose of its own medicine last week at Nebraska. The Cornhuskers trailed 38-26 with less than three minutes to play, and came out the jaws of defeat to pull out a 39-38 win. The go ahead score came on a 30 yard touchdown pass with only 0:38 left in the game. It was a gut wrenching way for the Spartans to suffer their first loss of the season, and for all intents and purposes put an end to their national championship aspirations. The loss wasn’t shocking to everyone including myself. Michigan State had flirted with disaster on several occasions already this season. The Spartans had won four games this year by 7 points or less, and three of those were by 4 or less. Included in those narrow wins was the miracle fumble return for a touchdown at Ann Arbor on the final play of the game.

Final Thoughts and Pick
I’ve contended that Michigan State was living on borrowed time, overvalued, and overrated since early October. The Spartans confidence has surely been shaken, and despite being clearly the better team in this matchup, I can’t envision their focus being what it should be on Saturday. I’ll be taking a small shot with the underdog in this contest for one of my college football picks this week.
