Based on preseason prognostications, this week's Memphis at Navy battle might decide who wins the AAC West. Houston will have something to say, but the winner places themselves in a great position.

Doug's 2018 CFB Record: 1-1

Memphis (1-0 SU and ATS ) at Navy (0-1 SU and ATS)

Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (CBSSN)

Free NCAAF Pick: Navy +4.5

Best Line Offered: BetOnline

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3448816, "sportsbooksIds":[1096,1275,1252,999996,19], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]

To the surprise of few, Memphis mauled Mercer 66-14 as 31-point home favorites. Going on the road against a mad bunch of Midshipmen will not be an easy task for the Tigers. Navy was not prepared for the diversity of Hawaii's offense and trailed 28-0 not even 20 minutes into the contest before losing 59-41 as 13-point road faves.

Given Memphis has a similar style of offense as the Rainbow Warriors to attack Navy, the college football odds board opened with the Tigers as 4.5-point favorites.

As expected, Brady White won the Memphis quarterback job and the junior threw for 358 yards and five touchdowns last week. It doesn't figure to be that simple on the road this week. Nonetheless, this is a potent Memphis offense.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Brady White's debut is record setting as Tigers blast Mercer, 66-14, to open the season. https://t.co/iuFyG2jdAV
— Memphis Tigers (@TigersAthletics) September 2, 2018
\n\n"}[/]

Four starting offensive linemen returned, as did their top three running backs, led by Darrell Henderson. As per usual, the Tigers have talented receivers and Navy lacks the speed and quickness on the secondary to stay with this quality of pass catchers over four quarters and they need a pass rush to slow Memphis.

For Navy to stay in this game, clearly, they cannot fall far behind like last week and they have to control the pigskin with the option. Quarterback Malcolm Perry is an explosive runner but at 5-foot-9 and 185 pounds he has to get to the edge, because running him up the middle will be of no value. It is imperative the Midshipmen establish fullback Anthony Garguilo up the middle. If he can average four or five yards a carry, that opens up the edges and keeps Navy on time for down and distance.

There are real concerns about the Navy's defense facing a team like Memphis, but they have covered their last three meetings as AAC partners. As always, the Middies play all 60 minutes with effort and the Tigers are 0-7 ATS as single-digit favorites against an opponent off a SU setback as a favorite.

That is why for college football picks I'll take the Navy as a home underdog and look for them to improve to 7-3 ATS in that role and 24-14 ATS as single-digit dogs.

Around the AAC (Games Saturday Unless Noted)

No. 16 TCU at SMU (+21.5), Friday at 9 p.m. ET, on ESPN2: It's the battle of the Iron Skillet.
