Here we go, the Bowl Season has arrived and it will be 24 days in length, covering 40 bowls in total. Time to get it started with five totals this Saturday.

The final bowl contest of the opening Saturday features the Sun Belt champion against the runner-up from Conference USA.

This season the oddsmakers had a good read on both teams with Appalachian State one game over .500 to the Over side and Middle Tennessee dead even.

The sportsbooks' college football odds on this game was 50.5 for the total.

The average score of a Middle Tennessee game this season was 54.5 total points, but it rose when the Blue Raiders were on the road to 58 on the nose. While that might immediately have someone think this could lead to an Over, in Middle Tennessee's last three games, all against fellow bowl teams, that number dropped to 46.3 points.

Appalachian State was an excellent offensive team, ranked 20th in scoring at 36.7 PPG and even more impressive at No.6 in points allowed at 15.7. That adds up to 52.2 PPG. On the road, the Mountaineers dipped a bit on offense and were slightly worse on defense, with the total reaching 50.5 PPG.

The Totals Outcome

In my preview for the for college football picks, (you can insert game here) I had a total score of 55 points. With this being senior quarterback Brent Stockstill's last game for Middle Tennessee, it's hard to imagine this tough young man will not want to go out with a bang and will lead his team to points. The Blue Raiders are 5-1 OVER in their most recent bowl outings.

App. State has seen their coach move on and year after year that ends up being a distraction. That could well be the case here, especially with less than two weeks since Scott Satterfield took the Louisville job. The Mountaineers are 9-2 OVER if they are off two or move Under's. Take the OVER.

Other Opening Bowl Totals & College Football Picks

NEW MEXICO BOWL - North Texas vs. Utah State (68) 2:00 p.m. ET, on ESPN: Utah State (8-3 OVER) was a prolific scoring team this year at 47.2 PPG, but away from Logan, UT, that slipped all the way to 32.2 PPG. North Texas was the top UNDER bet in the country at 11-1. The Mean Green's ability to dictate tempo makes this an UNDER play.

CURE BOWL Tulane vs. Louisiana (Total - 59), 1:30 p.m. ET, on CBSSN: If not for conference tie-ins, this match was a natural for the New Orleans Bowl. On the season Louisiana (6-6) averaged 32.5 PPG and allowed 33.7 PPG. Tulane (9-3 UNDER) lacked dynamic playmakers in their offense but scored more than 40 points three times against weaker defenses. With the Ragin' Cajuns 7-0 OVER in nonconference action of late, Play OVER.

LAS VEGAS BOWL Arizona State vs. Fresno State (Total - 53.5), 3:30 p.m. ET, on ABC: With Fresno State (10-2 UNDER) a defensive-minded team and Arizona State (6-6) not having their top receiver N'Keal Harry (not playing, going into NFL draft), this would seem like a lower scoring affair. But the Sun Devils scored and allowed 66 PPG in their last three games and the Bulldogs averaged 34.9 PPG. Let's scratch conventional wisdom. Play OVER.

CAMELLIA BOWL Georgia Southern vs. Eastern Michigan (Total - 47.5), 5:30 p.m. ET, on ESPN: Georgia Southern (6-5 OVER) was 6-2 Over in SBC action, but 3-0 Under otherwise. The Eagles are a strong running team (9th nationally) that can control the clock, but this total is this low for a reason. Eastern Michigan is 8-3 UNDER this season and 24-12 UNDER the past three years. Play Under.
